Meshes Of The Afternoon
This was almost one for the Not Available On DVD file. But Maya Deren: Experimental Films is finally back in print, thank God, and with it this dazzling gem of American surrealism, Meshes of the Afternoon.Meshes was the first film by dancer/filmmaker/avant-garde demigoddess Maya Deren, shot on a used 16mm camera (for almost no money) back in 1943. But it's still a proper mindbender sixty years later, witty, creepy, and poetic. See how she uses a handful of cheap camera tricks to warp time, space and identity into a triple Möbius strip of celluloid.
Obviously, Google Video is not the best viewing platform for a such an atmospheric, beautifully photographed little production, but I think you're getting the idea. Now run down to the local video store and demand a copy of your own.
