Preacher/Imposter-Mayor: I Was Not Brainwashed By Satanists

hailsatan.jpg

You may have heard, by now, the moving story of Don LaRose, the preacher who courageously dumped his wife and kids in Indiana after supposedly being abducted, brainwashed via electroshock, and threatened with Satanic messages.

Naturally, in his new identity as "Ken Williams"—name and relevant info stolen from a dead man named Bruce Kent Williams—Don LaRose decided the best way to stay out of the public eye was to accept a job as a radio personality, serve several terms as mayor, and set up a website called "Whatever Happened to Don LaRose?" at www.donlarose.com:

THIS IS THE AMAZING STORY OF...
Don LaRose...Also known as:
The Rev. Don LaRose
Donald LaRose
The Rev. Donald LaRose
Donald L. LaRose

The perfect cover, right? According to the Benton County Record, "Ken Williams" continued to deny any connection to the domain name he'd purchased even after similarities were pointed out between its nightmarishly sloppy web design and that of Ken Williams Ministries, the official website disseminating Williams' kooky creationist tracts.

But you know what? It gets weirder. Hit the jump.

It turns out that www.donlarose.com is a veritable goldmine of crazy. The most fun I had all weekend was clicking through chapter after incoherent chapter of the Don LaRose story, as written by "Ken Williams."

For instance, since the media picked up on the LaRose/Williams story, LaRose has made extensive changes to the site, including a big backdown from the earlier reported claim of having been attacked by Satanists:

While the plot obviously was Satanically inspired, I do not believe Satan worshipers were in any way involved, and you will see that as you read through the story. The reason I make this point is that most of the news stories have played up the Satanic part of this story. I have specifically told them what you have just read in these past few sentences, but they have ignored it.

Why have they ignored it? Well, Don, maybe it's because, even though you seem to have inserted text at the bottom of every single asymmetrical, poorly-designed page reading
There were signs it may have been a SATANIC inspired attack

you seem to have accidentally left up the part on your front page that still reads
There were signs it may have been a SATANIC attack.

So yeah, there's that.

The more you read about this guy, especially in his own words, the more convoluted and contradictory his story gets. In fact, you know what? I'm seriously starting to doubt that he was abducted, brainwashed, released, all for no apparent reason, and then run out of town with satanic threats, at all.

Er, call me crazy.
