Sweeney Todd Trailer

I have been beside myself with excitement ever since Lectric Lich dropped this trailer in my inbox last month. At the time, I didn't have a venue in which to present it, but now I do!

This is a trailer for Tim Burton's film version of Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. If you don't know much about Sweeney Todd, it is an old story of murder, revenge and stealth cannibalism that dates back to the 1800's. The tale has been told many times, but it is Stephen Sondheim's 1979 opera/musical that Burton has chosen to base his version on. The original stage show starred Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury in the title roles. For the new version, Burton has tapped long-time alum Johnny Depp to step into the role of Sweeney and Helena Bonham-Carter as Mrs. Lovett. Other stellar cast members include the awesome Alan Rickman (Severus Snape from the Harry Potter movies) and Sascha Baron Cohen (aka Borat and Ali G). From the looks of the trailer, Burton has hit the nail on the head with this one (unlike the dreadful Planet of the Apes) and while I don't see it being popular amongst mainstream movie goers, it will most certainly hit a chord with Burton fans and fans of Sweeney Todd. The film is slated to open the U.S. on Dec. 21st. See you in line!

Eeek! So terribly excited! We watch the trailer over here once a day in residence... December can't come soon enough.

I can't believe that after the success of Chicago and Dreamgirls that the studio is still afraid to market this as a musical. There is just that one bit of a song that stands out in the wrong way because it makes it seem weird that he's suddenly singing for no reason. Unfortunately, this trailer doesn't have me counting the days. Maybe I'll rent it off Netflix someday...

I can't remember the last time I was this excited about a new film. H2G2, I suppose. But I digress... this is a perfect story for Burton -- brutal comedy. Dark, bloody, and funny.
And the cast list? Do you see me drooling?
You're right, this won't be at the top of the popular audience list, but you know this is going to be an instant cult classic.
