Flashback Movie of the Week

Night_of_the_Comet_DVD_art.jpg

Ok. I'm sure you all know by now I am a bit of a movie freak. Of course I never get to go as often as I'd like but at least I have a lot of DVDs to get through.

So, in light of the TV season ending prematurely, what better way to spend an evening than with some old flicks I recently got on DVD. So once a week I'll give you guys a movie to watch. I'll be honest, they might lean more towards the horror side of the table but not always and they'll for the most part be older films. Pre 90's.

That said, the first flashback movie, as you know by the giant picture to the right, is Night of the Comet

Any movie with the tag line "They Came. They Shopped. They Saved The World." is destined for greatness and Night of the Comet is no exception.

The story revolves around a comet buzzing by earth that pretty much obliterates everyone except a few people including a gamer girl determined to keep her name in the top ten high scores of her favorite arcade game Tempest and an uzi-toting cheerleader, not to mention Chakotay from Star Trek Voyager.

Oh...and Zombies. Running, talking zombies.

It's just as brilliant as it sounds.

It's a hell of a movie. Full of that great 80's cheese we all know and love. Oddly enough the acting holds up. Pretty rare for an 80's horror movie. It's also an homage to the old 50's and 60's B Movies. It's hardly epic but it is certainly fun.

Checklist:

Bad cover version of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun? Check.

Department Store Shootout? Check.

Zombies? Check.

80's fashion montage? Check.

Secret Government Scientific Project subplot? Check.

Priceless.

Give it a rental. Better yet, get it from the Popsucker Store!

Goodness!
I loved this movie way back when. I always felt bad that everyone outside got dusted, but I figure that doesn't matter when your neighbors go all Dawn of the Dead on you.

i LOVED this movie as a kid and i bought this dvd when it was released last year, i have to agree, it really stands the test of time. Thanks for spotlighting this gem! When faced with the end of mankind the sisters exclaim "THE STORES ARE OPEN!" and head to the mall to play dress up. this was my teen gay fantasy. i also thought the scientist subplot thing was pretty decent and found the ending thoughtful.

And girls who like girls who like stuff!
