Just in case that Marilyn Monroe novena wasn't enough sacrilege for you, Gawker has come out with the hilarious suggestion that the paparazzi snaps of Britney resemble nothing so much as... Mary, Mother of God, as depicted in classical painting.

It's true! You can really see it! Those ecstatic eyes, that rapturous smile... The resemblance is totally there, and deliciously ironic.

Except...

They goofed. The painting that most resembles Britney in this shot isn't a picture of the Virgin Mary.

It's clearly labeled right on that Gawker page as Titian's Penitent Mary Magdalen—not Mary the Virgin Mother, but Mary the 'ho-who-has-seen-the-error-of-her-ways. Which would not be so much ironic as it would be sadly, sadly appropriate.

Aw, Brit! You can't even catch an ironic break. Get well soon, sweetie.
