Britney Spears <3 Ghost In The Shell

britney.jpg

So how do you make a music video for a pop star who can't be bothered to show up to her court dates, let alone her video shoots? Why not just draw her! And how do you pull it off in a fashion that can be passed off with a modicum of pop-culture cred? Why not rip off one of those animes the kids are always watching!

And so in the new video for Britney's "Break the Ice," we get to see a superpowered animated Britney pull a few of the Major's signature moves from Ghost in the Shell--like that backwards nosedive off a skyscraper. Of course, we really want to see her dodgin' paparazzi with GitS-style thermoptic camouflage!

Here's the deal: go to BlackoutBall.com, punch in the passwords "danger" and "victory," and you can watch the video on Britney's dime (record company lawyers pulled it off YouTube).

Britney fans are already dissing the video on message boards, even though it's beautifully drawn, erotically complex, and actually fits the song pretty well. What's missing?

Just a heads for anybody who - like me - assumed there would be something to expect at 6:30. There isn't. Apparently Zomba web designers are too lazy to remove that stupid notice, the video is up already anyway. I've met two nice people in the chat though, plus I hadn't been in a public chatroom for ages. So I guess it wasn't that much of a waste. But god am I tired now (6:30 EST means 23:30 in Central Europe)

Let's see... Why are Britney fans unhappy with this? Well, before there were whisperings about an upcoming world tour, Britney was apparently rehearsing some choreography with backup dancers for the "Break the Ice" video. Then it gets announced that the video is animated, which would obviously make them a bit concerned. After seeing it, I was at least expecting some live elements in it somewhere. Where is she? I think the most the bulk of her fans are going to get out of this is some new source material for their forum signatures. Yeah, if I were a Britney fan, I'd probably be pretty irritated.

Since I'm not one, though, all I see is a poor Ghost in the Shell/Aeon Flux knockoff with some really dodgy animation. Isn't this supposed to be from the guy who did that Gnarls Barkley video? Jeez.

Bad from any angle, really.

And girls who like girls who like stuff!
