Retrophilia: Girls & Boys

retrophilia (ret troh FEE lee uh) n. 1 An intense attraction for things of the past. 2 a weekly series for popsucker wherin the irrepressible Wootini reveals the horrors of the past to the present to avoid making the same mistakes in the future.
Aw. What an idyllic-looking shot of two men standing romantically by a pond. That's very progressive for an ad in 1969. Well, yes and no. See, what you think you're seeing isn't what you're actually seeing.
If you're curious, make the jump to see the whole picture!

Right. So there's no way of knowing exactly what you're looking at here. But it's kind of fun to try and figure out which of the androgynous figures is the woman who is meant to wear this perfume in order to at least smell like a woman since she clearly doesn't want to look like one.
I love the slightly cranky tone to the text, as though the makers of this perfume are annoyed that you can't tell men from women anymore just by looking at them. How dare people not conform to standard social morays! How very dare they?! So if you simply must dress like a man by wearing trousers and short hair, then at the very least, please wear a pretty perfume. Even if it's called something incredibly inappropriate like "My Sin," which conjures up images of sex kittens and an entirely different ad campaign.
Oh, and my guess is the one on the right. The hips are a dead giveaway.
