Retrophilia: Changing Your Stripes

retrophilia (ret troh FEE lee uh) n. 1 An intense attraction for things of the past. 2 a weekly series for popsucker wherin the irrepressible Wootini reveals the horrors of the past to the present to avoid making the same mistakes in the future.
The 60s were an odd time for fashion, as the conservative ways of the 50s made way for the insanity of the 70s. So sometimes you weren't sure what you were going to get. But judging by this guy's look, regardless of the clothes, nearly anybody could be a model back then. But even if you think he's not so bad, just wait until you see who's waiting after the jump! (And if you think I'm being harsh, wait 'til you see what the ad says about them!)

So yeah, which type are you? Are you like the first guy in the boat neck? Where you're modest and cover up? Or are you like the guy in the tank top where you show off your guns? Then again, maybe you're like the poor schmuck in the muscle shirt where "you think you have muscles." Seriously? Oh, the poor guy. He was probably all excited to be paid to model in this ad, and then he sees it and he's like, "What?! How dare they! How very dare they!" Then again, the look on his face kind of makes me wonder if he wasn't in on the joke from the start.
And what else can you say about the guy in the crew neck? He just likes stripes. That's it. He's go no muscles to speak of, and doesn't even think he has any. That's why the shirt is kind of baggy. Maybe he hopes the stripes will distract from that wild and crazy facial hair he's got going. Damn beatniks!
But what exactly are they implying about the guy in the V-neck? "You think plunging necklines look good on you as well as on the birds?" Are they implying this is a gateway shirt to cross-dressing? Will the next thing he wears be the bikini on the model to the right? It's a little sad that in this ad for h.i.s. clothing for men, the best-looking model in it is the woman in the last frame. Even with the baggy panties. Although her slightly-confused expression makes me wonder if perhaps she wasn't in on the joke... or maybe she's just a little dim... hard to tell with models!

This entry in the series is fantastic, and the three-quarter sleeves on the boat-neck model are a bold, striking choice.
And the crew-neck dude's beard and hair styling is HOT.
