Retrophilia: Enough Is Too Much

pepsism.jpg

retrophilia (ret troh FEE lee uh) n. 1 An intense attraction for things of the past. 2 a weekly series for popsucker wherin the irrepressible Wootini reveals the horrors of the past to the present to avoid making the same mistakes in the future.

In honor of Memorial Day, I thought I'd do a barbecue post for Retrophilia. (Since war and the military tend not to lend themselves as well to amusing ads from the past) So in that vein, here's a lovely young woman who has prepared quite the summer picnic feast for her guests. But has she prepared well enough? Make the jump to find out!

Think she's got enough Pepsi there? There's only two six-packs. That's can't be enough. I hope she's got more in the house. I mean, her guests will certainly work up quite a thirst playing tennis in her yard. So being that she has a tennis court in her yard, I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume she can afford to buy plenty of refreshments for her equally wealthy guests. Although, now that I think about it, if you're that rich, why would you be serving Pepsi?

Still, you've gotta admire Pepsi for this ad campaign. Basically, they're urging you to buy twice as much of their product as you normally do. You know, so you don't run out. Because the social stigma that will place upon your name will be impossible to erase, even if you do send your husband down to the store to buy another case. These people do not forgive easily.

I'd love to see their "Think Twice" display that the text mentions are in stores. A big sign ordering you to buy twice as much as you were going to. "Give us your money!!" Still, I do kind of crave those glasses. And while this ad is from 1971, making those glasses as old as me, I've still seen them around. Whether they're reproductions or the original glasses are as hardy as I am, I don't know... Mm. Now I want a Pepsi. Damn those advertisers! (But only one!)

Dude, it's just badminton, not tennis.

My family had those glasses when I was a kid. That's the first thing that jumped out at me after making the jump.

Ah, memories of long, lazy, 115 degree summer days in the desert of Arizona, when the only cool break you could get was an ice cold, well, piece of ice; we didn't actually drink Pepsi on hot desert days; that would have been kind of stupid in that kind of heat....

Anyway, thanks for the memories. The glasses were awesome.

And girls who like girls who like stuff!
