Retrophilia: General Electronics

retrophilia (ret troh FEE lee uh) n. 1 An intense attraction for things of the past. 2 a weekly series for popsucker wherin the irrepressible Wootini reveals the horrors of the past to the present to avoid making the same mistakes in the future.
What is this crazy contraption on this lovely young woman's head? You might be able to guess what it's doing to her, but maybe not exactly how! I've got an ad full of more electronic gadgets after the jump, as well as a very surprising revelation of my own!

I love how happy she looks wearing her portable hair dryer. But how exactly do they heat the air all the way up at the edge of the "Sally Victor bouffant bonnet (whatever that is)?" That giant thing on her hip is just the fan to blow the air? It's huge! But hey, it comes with an adjustable waist or shoulder strap so you have the choice of where you want to wear the bulky contraption. And while they claim it's portable, you'll notice the cable coming off the bottom, so it's still going to need an outlet. Can't be walking around the house and into the yard while you dry your hair!
It's still nice to know, however, that you can sit and make some calls or write some letters while you dry your hair. Reading magazines is such a waste of time! Lovely carrying case, described as both "attractive" and "luxurious." I know the ad's in black and white, but I feel like it should be colored a pale lime green. Just the impression I get.
The portable iron in the bottom right is kind of boring, aside from the fact that it still looks hefty enough to crush someone's skull with very little effort. And the "fanfare" alarm clock in the upper right looks familiar, like my grandparents might have had one. Although I don't recall hearing any "Mel-O-Tone" musical tones as an alarm as a kid. But then I have a memory like a sieve.
No, it's the Toast-R-Oven in the middle that thrills me the most to see in this ad. Because I can personally verify that it does in fact toast both sides at once, top-browns, bakes potatoes, frozen foods and pies. How, you ask? Because I have this exact GE toaster sitting on my kitchen counter at this very moment. My grandparents had it in their attic and gave it to me when I went away to college in 1989 so I could make stuff in my dorm room. I always wondered what year it was from, because it looked old, and I couldn't believe it still worked. So when I saw this ad from 1966, I was thrilled to learn that my toaster over was around 42 years old. So I guess GE knew what they were doing back in the day, because they made some long-lasting stuff. One of the heating rods is a little off in one corner, so your toast doesn't come out completely even, but for a four decade old machine, I'm impressed that it still works at all!

We actually had one of those hairdryers in the house. they were fun. they made you feel like jiffypop
