Retrophilia: Sci-Fi Spirits

galaxysm.jpg

retrophilia (ret troh FEE lee uh) n. 1 An intense attraction for things of the past. 2 a weekly series for popsucker wherin the irrepressible Wootini reveals the horrors of the past to the present to avoid making the same mistakes in the future.

You've gotta love the sci-fi spin a lot of '70s advertising took. Take this couple, for instance. They look straight out of some awesome movie like Logan's Run or something. The problem is, there are certain things I'm not really sure should ever be sold with a science-fiction angle.

Make the jump and see if you agree...

Look at them. Lovely young couple, sitting in front of their viewscreen enjoying a fine drink while taking in the majesty of space. Well, she is, at any rate. Somehow, he finds her more interesting than the stars. Go figure. I just love their '70s futuristic jumpsuits. Makes you wonder if they're on a spaceship instead of in their living room. And, naturally, in the future, we will all be drinking Galaxy Whiskey. Because "The age of Galaxy is here."

I also love the tag line at the bottom: "Taste the mellow glow of time in Galaxy Whiskey." What in the world is that supposed to mean? What does the "mellow glow of time" taste like anyway? Cheap whiskey? And that packaging is fantastic. You've gotta give 'em credit for going whole hog with the concept.

But the best part is in the text where they presume you're looking at this ad and thinking, "I've heard whiskey promises before. Can Galaxy really be better than what I'm drinking now?" And what's their response? "Could be." Seriously. "Could be." How very non-committal, guys. Don't worry about setting too high a bar for yourselves...

(Oh, and if you're hearing whiskey promising you things, you should probably think about cutting back a little...)
