Retrophilia: Sound Styling

retrophilia (ret troh FEE lee uh) n. 1 An intense attraction for things of the past. 2 a weekly series for popsucker wherin the irrepressible Wootini reveals the horrors of the past to the present to avoid making the same mistakes in the future.
This couple looks set for a romantic evening at home. But what could make it perfect? A bottle of wine? A copy of The Joy Of Sex? Matching pet rocks? Oh, no. If it's the '70s, it's all about the music. But what will you use to play your new Supertramp LP? It's more important than you'd think... at least this ad would have you believe it is. Make the jump to see if you agree. Warning: Shag carpeting ahead!

Oh yeah. Everything's "just right" when you've got an awesome stereo system like this one. I mean, seriously how cool is that thing? It looks like something out of Logan's Run! I love that the text describes the sound from this stereo as "luscious," but what's surprising is that it suggests that it will "reveal your taste, your style, your deepest feelings to him." Yeah, that's right. "Him." This isn't the guy's apartment complete with awesome white shag carpeting leading the way into the bedroom with a view. Nope, it's hers. Women's lib!
This seductress lets him know that she's involved in the "today" sound because... well, because she's got a stereo that looks like it comes from the future, but it still has an 8-track player! And if you like those bubble speakers enough, you can add two more and get four channel sound! Fantastic!
Also, you can pick a color that will go with your shag carpeting, but the ad makes it seem like you've only got two options. Hm. Do I go with "pale, pale champagne" or "very cool blue?" I'm glad it's not just "pale champagne," because that would clash with my love beads. Although just "cool blue" would go great with my lava lamp!
"All this glamour and mood-setting can be yours and his now, so why wait? Tonight might be one of those nights." That's right buy this stereo and get yourself laid! Hurry!

I'm in love with those speakers! Seriously, put on Cerrone's Love In C Minor and I'd be swooning like that classy gal in the picture!
