Retrophilia: Sunny Days

retrophilia (ret troh FEE lee uh) n. 1 An intense attraction for things of the past. 2 a weekly series for popsucker wherin the irrepressible Wootini reveals the horrors of the past to the present to avoid making the same mistakes in the future.
We were having a heat wave in NYC this weekend, so I went to the beach and was inspired to post this particular entry to celebrate the summer. This lovely young woman looks like she's having a religious experience. And I suppose for some women, worshiping the sun might actually be close to a religious experience. But when you see this ad, you might think twice about it... see what I mean after the jump!

Beautiful tan today.
Young looking skin tomorrow.
Skin cancer at some point after that.
Seriously, I didn't even do any color correcting on this ad. Some of it might be just because the background is such a bright yellow and she's wearing a white bikini, but this woman is being portrayed as being this dark on purpose. Hopefully they screwed around with the color balance when they laid this ad out. Because no human being should actually be that shade. Well, at least not an obviously Caucasian blond bimbo. Maybe someone from New Delhi, but not her.
And I love that they insist that the "special ingredient" in Copportone will keep your skin looking young while you get a great tan. I can't imagine. I would assume that this woman would look like a raisin these days. You know, those wrinkly old women you see at the beach with the perma-tans that are so dark they look like a whole other race. This is why so many Hollywood actresses have to have plastic surgery... that sun's a killer!
Oh, and in case you couldn't read the fine print at the bottom, Coppertone is the "Official Sun Care Product of Florida's Walt Disney World." Great! So if you didn't bring any sunscreen with you to the park, you can pay twice as much to buy some at the gift shop!
