Retrophilia: Don't Get It Wet!

retrophilia (ret troh FEE lee uh) n. 1 An intense attraction for things of the past. 2 a weekly series for popsucker wherin the irrepressible Wootini reveals the horrors of the past to the present to avoid making the same mistakes in the future.
Doesn't she look lovely? Of course she does she's in an advertisement. And as everyone knows, you never look as good as the model in the picture when you wear the same outfit. Whether it's Photoshop, professional styling or even just good lighting, models will always turn out better than real people. It's their job. But this dress, in particular, has a very unique feature that will ensure that it would never look as good in real life as it does in this photo.
Go on and make the jump to see what I'm talking about!

That's right it's made out of paper. Prettily patterned paper, to be fair, but still paper nonetheless. And all the cute puns like "just off the press" or "the newsy gown" they try to distract you with shouldn't draw attention away from the fact that this dress is made of paper. Paper. Like what you write on. Which means that it probably crinkles and crumples as you walk around, and I would guess makes a lot of noise. And forget about sitting down in it what if it tears?! How embarrassing!
I mean, it's only $1.25 (plus 25 cents shipping and handling), so I guess it's not that bad of a deal, but I can't imagine you'd be able to wear it more than once. Even if it does say "when you're through you just give it the air." Because obviously, you can't wash it. And they didn't have Febreeze back in 1966. What I'd love to know is how they made it fire resistant. It's paper. What kind of nasty chemicals did they have to use to make paper that wouldn't burn? The mind boggles.
The pie looks pretty good, though. Even if the dress looks like they just made it out of some overstock wallpaper they found in a warehouse somewhere!

Best Retrophilia to date! I was honestly reading the ad going "Oh, ahh! I wish I could still get one." I'm a sucker for clever marketing....or not so clever.
