retrophilia (ret troh FEE lee uh) n. 1 An intense attraction for things of the past. 2 a weekly series for popsucker wherin the irrepressible Wootini reveals the horrors of the past to the present to avoid making the same mistakes in the future.
From the cropped sample image to the right, you can already tell that this week's entry is going to be a print ad for Diet 7UP. The catch to this one is the pair of celebrities doing the hawking. See, there's nothing inherently weird or funny about this ad aside from the completely mismatched endorsers. Make the jump to see what I mean!
That's right, it's Wonder Woman and an insult comedian. Selling soda. Lyda Carter looks thrilled to be in the ad, but Don Rickles looks a little confused. Like he's thinking, "I feel miscast here. What are they going for here?" Lynda's hand also looks ridiculously contorted as she tries to hold the bottle aloft without covering the logo. And the can in Don's hand looks Photoshopped in. Well, if they had Photoshop back in 1980. And Lynda, you're gorgeous and all, and I totally love Wonder Woman, but I don't believe for a moment that Diet 7UP "doesn't have that funny diet taste." All diet sodas claim that, and none of them are telling the truth. So maybe I do kind of agree with Don that you should just smile and look stunning while someone else tries shilling for the soda...

See, even super heroes have weight issues. Or, like crappy tasting beverages. I guess you would have to be a super hero to like diet soda, especially back in the day.
