The Amazing Recap: "Did You Push My Sports Bra Off The Ledge?"

97124_D2831c.jpg

Previously on The Amazing Race, The Geeks picked brains over brawn and nearly came in first, but were edged out by Ken and Tina, who refused to "let the fat guys win one." In other news, The Divorcées started acting dumber than the blondes and couldn't read clues. Terrence and Sarah continued to act like crazy people, and also struggled with reading comprehension. Anthony and Stephanie started out in the back of the pack and remained there for the duration of the leg, and were sadly eliminated.

This week, previously intelligent teams make dumb moves, and people I liked start acting awful. And it all leads to an unfortunate end. Full recap after the jump!

This week's Pit Stop drama is between The Divorcées and Nick and Starr. Apparently, one of the Divorcée's sports bra was drying on the window ledge, and mysteriously fell to its death. Starr was in the area, and became The Divorcée's prime suspect, but Starr quite naturally points out that faking a sports bra suicide doesn't really help them get ahead in the race. But The Divorcées are eager to play just as dirty as Starr. What. Ever. Ken and Tina take off at 12:51 AM, and fly to La Paz, Bolivia. Okay, well, at least we're getting out of Brazil, but we're just flying to the West Coast of South America. I'd like another continent next week, please. As Phil describes the location, he mentions that the city is 12,000 feet above sea level, so the altitude could prove difficult. Teams will have to take a cab to the statue of Simón Bolívar in time for the morning newspaper delivery to look through the paper for their clue. Ken and Tina remind us that they're separated and need to work on their communication skills as they hop in a cab. The Geeks are next, and interview about how they're going to use their brains and not rush into problems like other teams. Foreshadowing much? Ouch. Oops! Spoiler alert! Sarah is really excited about going to Bolivia for some reason, and has apparently had an epiphany. "I'm realizing that everybody else is out for themselves," she interviews. "So, this is not a popularity competition. It's actually us against the other teams." And it only took her until the third episode to figure that out! Good for her! Ty and Aja remind us they're long-distance daters finally spending a lot of time with each other, and Dallas reminds us that he's getting to know his mom, Toni, better. Ken and Tina and The Geeks arrive at the airport as Nick and Starr take off for their cab. The Divorcées are next, followed by The Frat Boys. They insist that they're in fine shape, and Red Head Frat Boy declares that he likes the way he looks. The other one just chuckles. Heh. The Blondes bring up the rear, and declare that even though they're always last, people are underestimating them. Um, okay. Whatever you say. Everyone arrives at the airport, and apparently there's no drama, because two flights easily wing their way over to Bolivia. As soon as they land, teams struggle with the altitude. The Geeks aren't real confident they're gonna be able to handle the thinner air. They're second in a cab heading for the statue behind Nick and Starr. It doesn't really matter, though, because all the teams end up camping out in front of the statue, which is basically on an island in the middle of the street. They're given really pretty blankets, though, which look warm and I would totally want to keep, although I probably wouldn't want to have to drag it around with me.

The next morning, The girls put on their makeup, and Dallas shaves (dry, it looks like!) I guess since they're all just sitting around waiting, they can make themselves look nice for the cameras. As long as Terrence doesn't try to put his hair in that fauxhawk thing again. Nick tries to clear the air with The Divorcées, not wanting them to hate his team for no reason. They still think Starr pushed her sports bra, so they're basically going to keep hating them for no reason, and Nick politely gives up. Sarah introduces them to a local woman who she and Terrence are going to use as a guide, and The Divorcées find one of their own. Those can sometimes be very, very helpful. The papers arrive, and it's like a madhouse as they all tear into them. There's an ad for a hat sale that looks nothing like the surrounding classifieds, and in the text of the ad, it says "Make your way to", which is a dead giveaway. Surprisingly, The Frat Boys are the first to spot it and head off to the next location, which is a hat shop. Tina tells Ken she's spotted the clue, and they grab Starr and Nick on their way, so I guess their "loose alliance" is still going strong. Everyone else starts finding the ad, except for The Blondes, which I'm sure doesn't come as a surprise to anyone. Interestingly, Terrence and Sarah's guide tells them to walk while everyone else gets cabs. The Geeks follow T&S, and struggle with the thin air. Finally The Blondes get a clue, and a taxi. Amusingly, Terrence & Sarah beat The Frat Boys to the hat shop because of the traffic. Heh. They all get their clues, which sends them to a Detour. First option is "Musical March," where teams gather up musicians who are several blocks apart to make a band, and deliver them to a band leader in a park. In "Bumpy Ride," they must ride these rickety-looking hand-carved wooden bikes across some jarring cobblestone streets, following a map. At the park where they get their next clue, is a U-Turn. Basically, once during the race, you can use the U-Turn to sabotage a team you believe is behind you by forcing them to do the other Detour option as well, before continuing on. It's crappy, but a better option than the previous Yield, which had the Yielded team just sitting on their asses for a half-hour. At least here if they're fast, they might not lose as much time. Also, there's only a couple U-Turns during the entire race. Anyway, Phil explains this aspect of the game, and The Frat Boys choose the marching band since they're not good riders. What? I thought they said they were in great shape! As they head off, one asks if they should get a taxi, and the other notes that the clue says they have to go on foot. Terrence and Sarah, however, get a cab, as do The Geeks. Oops. As other teams head off on foot, The Geeks get the Rattlesnake of Doom. Everyone's going for the bike riding, except for the Frat Boys and The Blondes. Oh, and The Divorcées declare that they're reading their clues extra careful this week. Terrence and Sarah realize their mistake and direct their cab to return to where they started so they can set out on foot, but The Geeks don't, and believe they're in the lead as we go to commercial. (I also love how Terrence and Sarah's local guide seems more distraught about having to go back and start over than they are!)

The Geeks are first to the bikes, but not playing by the rules is going to get them a time penalty at the end. That's how it works. Toni is seriously out of breath walking to the bikes, and starts wishing they'd chosen the band, which worries Dallas. Amusingly, the bike riders are given helmets and gloves decorated with plumes of feathers so they look even more ridiculous than they normally would. The Frat Boys discover that the marching band is clearly the slower option because the musicians move like a marching band. Which is to say, not all that quickly. The bikers are discovering that these bikes are clunky and hard to steer, especially when they pick up speed. Terrence sweetly warns Sarah not to let Tina pass her, leaving the threat unfinished, so it's not clear exactly what he'd do to her if she let it happen. One of The Divorcées loses control of her bike and hits the curb, wiping out. Dallas is still proud of his mom, even though she can barely breathe. She's toughing it out. The Geeks make it to the park and opt not to U-Turn anyone because they're clearly way in the lead. The Rattlesnake of Doom would tend to disagree here, guys. The directions send them to a wrestling arena where they will find their next clue. The Frat Boys and their drummers pick up a horn section, and are getting frustrated at how slowly they're moving. Meanwhile, the bikers are flying dangerously down the street. It's a little scary how fast they're going. The Blondes are enjoying leading their band, condescendingly talking about how they would turn around and clap and dance with them to motivate them into moving faster. Ty gets frustrated when Aja struggles with his bike and she interviews how she's learning he's kind of competitive. Dallas urges his mom to hurry up because he doesn't want to go home, and she gets a little cranky, declaring she's not doing it on purpose and doesn't want to go home either. Interestingly, The Blondes actually do seem to have gotten their band to move faster, because they make it to the band leader before The Frat Boys. Huh. Terrence and Sarah and Ken and Tina don't U-Turn anybody, and head to the arena. Nobody is using the U-Turn, but Starr is afraid that one of the teams that don't like them might use it on them. The Divorcées don't want Nick and Starr to pass them, but they totally do. Then one of The Divorcées totally wipes out again, going up onto the sidewalk and into a building, nearly taking out a pedestrian in the process! It's kind of hilarious, although she does seem to have injured herself a bit. Meanwhile, as Nick and Starr blow by, they practically beg Ty and Aja to use the U-Turn on The Divorcées. Um, play your own game. At the U-Turn, Nick declares they aren't going to use it, but Starr second guesses that thought as we go to commercials.

97124_D3203b.jpg
Which naturally means that when we come back, they don't U-turn their rivals. Ty and Aja also don't use it, and in the car, Aja can't believe that Starr and Nick wanted to get them to waste their one U-Turn so they wouldn't have to. The Divorcées know they're in last place, so they don't use it either. There's some grabbing of taxi cabs, and Dallas is a little reassured that there's at least one team behind them. The Geeks hit a delay when their cab has to stop for gas, and Terrence and Sarah run into trouble when their driver doesn't seem to know where he's going. So Ken and Tina are the first to get to the arena and do the Roadblock, which only one team member can perform. Ken takes it for his team, which means he's the one who has to put on a colorful, skin-tight wrestling costume and pick a Fighting Cholita. This female wrestler will show them a series of moves that they must execute for a judge, and when they're through, they receive their next clue. If they screw up, they have to go and practice again before making another attempt. So mistakes will be extra costly. Rehearsal is out back in private rings, but the real fight is in the arena in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Hilariously, Ken doesn't realize at first that the Cholitas are the smiling women in hats. Heh. The Blondes are second to the arena, and find the whole situation amusing. Ken looks like a Sid and Marty Krofft superhero as he practices with his Cholita as The Geeks arrive. They all look ridiculous in their outfits, and some struggle with the moves. Ken is first to make an attempt, and now he's even wearing a cape. Tina laughs hysterically as Ken does everything very well, running around the ring, taking kicks, flipping the Cholita around, and then teaming up with her to take out the referee. Heh. It's all very silly. Ken gets check marks on all six moves, and gets his next clue, which sends him and Tina to the Pit Stop. It's just a park at the top of a hill, but Phil makes sure to mention that the last team to arrive here "may" be eliminated. That's the first indication that this could be a non-elimination leg. Sometimes it's "will" and sometimes it's "may." Doesn't always mean that, but it's a ray of hope.

Meanwhile, Terrence and Sarah's driver has gotten them lost, and they actually jump out of the cab when they see a red and yellow flag, even though it's checkerboard, not stripes. They quickly realize their mistake, but are stupid enough to get back into the same cab with the driver who is already lost. Ty and Aja's cab runs out of gas, but they're smart enough to bail and get another taxi. Eventually Terrence and Sarah give up on the traffic and walk the last block to the arena themselves. With a whole bunch of teams on the way there, I'm happy that Dallas and Toni are the next to arrive. Dallas takes it, which is nice, because we get to see him in the spandex. Unfortunately, when The Geek hits the ring, he blows the second move, falling on his head as he tries to roll over the rope into the ring. So it's back to training for him. The Blonde totally screws up the flip, and has to go back to practice some more. The Divorcées in last place finally arrive, and once inside, Aja totally rats out Starr and Nick for trying to get them to U-Turn them. Sneaky. Dallas totally aces his wrestling, much to his mom's delight, and looks hot even in the dorky costume. Sarah screws up the "taunting" part, and has to start over as The Geek admits the altitude was getting to him. He even has to have some oxygen before he can exert himself again. The Frat Boy gives it his best shot, and makes it in one, then Nick takes his turn, followed by Ty. They both get their clues, and head for the Pit Stop. The Geek finally has enough oxygen to give it another try, but as he climbs up into the ring, gets all dizzy and sadly screws it up again. Aw. This is where they started to worry as they go to commercials. Really? I was worrying the first time he screwed it up. The normal penalty for breaking the rules is thirty minutes, so to be safe, they'd have to finish a half-hour before the last team arrives. And the longer it takes them to complete the Roadblock, the less likely that's gonna be.

The Geeks continue to fret as Ken and Tina easily find the park and the Pit Stop. I love that Ken's wearing his pants, but the top is still his spandex wrestling costume. Heh. They're first, and won a seven night trip for two to Cabo San Lucas in Mexico. Nice. Better than the ATV they won last week. I'm impressed that they've come in first two weeks in a row. I hadn't expected it from them. Finally The Geek figures out what he's doing wrong and thinks he's got the routine down. So he gives it another shot and finally finishes, as does The Blonde (whose wrestling outfit is pink, naturally). The Geek is sad it took him so long, but proud that he finished, and can call himself a Luchador. Well, you didn't get to wear a cool mask, though. Back at the arena, Sarah finally finishes, and they are in a panic to get out of there because only The Divorcées are behind them. For their part, The Divorcées are praying for someone's cab to break down because it's the only way they'll have a chance. Well, not the only way, but yeah. The editors throw in lots of shots of cabs stuck in traffic to try and intensify the drama, but it's clearly misdirection. Toni and Dallas are team number two and are thrilled about it, as am I. I think they're adorable. Lots of cabs racing through traffic, passing each other and taking alternate routes and coming out ahead of the other. It's all very confusing. In the cab, one Divorcée tells the other what Aja said about Starr and Nick wanting them to use the U-Turn, and they don't want to be eliminated so they can get their revenge. Terrence and Sarah are number three, with The Blondes making a surprisingly strong finish in fourth. The Geeks suddenly read their clue for some reason and realize they're going to get hit with the time delay for taking a cab instead of walking. Ty and Aja come in fifth with Nick and Starr hot on their heels in sixth. The Geeks pretty much know they're doomed as The Divorcées pray for a miracle. The Frat Boys are in seventh. The Geeks arrive in eighth, but Phil sadly informs them they have a thirty-minute penalty for taking a cab instead of walking as instructed in the clue. The Divorcées are a little ways behind, but not far enough as The Geeks are still waiting. Phil informs the ladies they are the last team to arrive, but The Geeks had a penalty, so they're still in the race. The Divorcées are tearfully thrilled to still be in it, and The Geeks are embarrassed to have been sent home because they didn't read the clue. They knew they couldn't compete physically, but hoped they could make up for it with their brains. So it's extra humiliating to be knocked out this way. But they're still best friends, and I'm sure they'll still play Guitar Hero together.

Next week, Ty and Aja start to realize how difficult it can be spending this much time together, and it looks like Starr injures herself during a windsurfing on a concrete race track. But since we actually hear her saying she thinks she's broken her arm, I'm sure she's fine.

And girls who like girls who like stuff!
