The Amazing Recap: "Do It Like A Madman"

97213_D0211b.jpg

Previously, on The Amazing Race: Eight teams set out from Bolivia to New Zealand on another leg in a race around the world. Long-distance daters Ty and Aja hit some tension from finally spending long periods of times actually in each others' presence; Ken and Tina edged out The Frat Boys for the Fast Forward and climbed to the top of a wicked tall skyscraper to make it to the Pit Stop first and win yet another trip that they can take after the race if they're still speaking to each other; the pointless rivalry between The Divorcées and Nick and Starr continued, but no one besides then cared. Even when Starr nearly broke her arm. The Blondes fell way behind everyone else, and were eliminated.

So who comes in last this week? Make the jump and find out!

Before we can get this leg of the race started, we have to get a little product placement out of the way. We watch Ken and Tina awkwardly pretend to look up the trip they won on a laptop while a Travel O'City gnome watches menacingly next to them. They head out first, at 6:03 am, and learn that this leg will take them to Siem Reap, Cambodia. There, they must go to a gas station and find their next clue. Ken and Tina are still enjoying being together because they're in the lead. Although there's a cute moment in the interview where Ken remarks how great it is that an old man and old woman are doing so well, and she just sort of grimaces. "Speak for yourself," she mutters. Heh. Oh, also, in the car, Ken estimates that it's probably a three hour drive to the airport. This game always looks so thrilling on TV, but it's things that this that remind you it's really hours upon hours of boring traveling in vehicles with little bursts of frenetic activity here and there. I'd still totally want to do it, though! At 8:19, Terence and Sarah head out, and are already in their über-competitive mode. Ken and Tina head to the travel agency in the airport to get their flight. The Divorcées are next, and declare their intention to use their brains to get themselves into the lead. Says one: "I think we should go straight to the airport, get in line at the first ticket counter we see, and go with the best flight." Really? Genius plan. I probably would've thought to go to the airport, but getting the best flight? Genius. Ken and Tina get a flight to Singapore with a transfer to Siem Reap and worry Terence and Sarah will make their flight. Unfortunately, this is where karma steps in to create some drama by having Terence pulled over for speeding. He was doing 117km in a 100km zone. Not sure how fast that is, but it doesn't seem like much. Sarah reassures Terence that he's a very good driver as they get back on the road and Toni and Dallas get their start. Toni continues to hope that she can find something to bring to the team since she can't keep up with the kids on this race. At the airport, Terence and Sarah ask for the same flight, but are told it's probably already closed for the day. Nick and Starr get going and she explains that she didn't actually break her arm, but while it's still painful, she won't let it stop her. Of course not. Then you'd be off the show! Duh! The travel agent calls to check, and informs Terence and Sarah that it's okay and they can get on that flight. You could barely hear her over the over-dramatic music playing, though. Sarah muses that Ken and Tina won't be happy to see they made their flight, and go figure -- they're not.

The Frat Boys hope to get on an early flight, and Andrew continues to have problems with Dan's bossy, know-it-all nature. At the airport, The Divorcées book seats on the next flight, which leaves about four hours behind the first. When Toni and Dallas arrive, The Divorcées turn on their bitchy grins and joke about how Dallas' hair looks like Teen Wolf. In turn, he wonders what they look like without makeup. Probably like the harpies they are. Seriously, this whole scene was completely uncalled for. I have to wonder how long their husbands lasted before they chewed them up and spat them out. The two teams get their tickets as Ty and Aja finally get their start. Problem is, they finished so far behind everyone else that it's 3:04 when they depart. Meaning that making that flight is probably not likely. But watch the editors do their darndest to make it seem like it is! Ty and Aja remain devoted to each other, even after he interviews that he wouldn't even trade her in for a Porsche or anything like that. Heh. Love the way Aja shakes her head in disbelief at the dumbass words coming out of her man's mouth. Adorable. The Frat Boys don't want Ty and Aja to catch up to them, but seeing how they got going at 12:44, that doesn't seem likely. Especially if it's a three hour drive to the airport. Nick and Starr also get on the same flight as everyone else in this bunch. The Frat Boys get there and are excited to learn there are other Americans on this flight, but their balloon deflates when they learn it's doubtful they'll make it as well. Aja is eager to make a comeback as The Frat Boys are told they can't get on this flight and we go to commercials.

The Frat Boys are dismayed, but Dan decides to go straight to the airline counter and see if they can get on the flight anyway. Amazingly, they do, and Andrew has to admit that Dan isn't completely useless. No, just a little annoying. We watch Ty and Aja get their tickets, but even though they remind us that anything's possible, that's gonna have to be a hell of a bunch in order to get them caught up. In Singapore, Ken and Tina are upset to see the second flight to Singapore caught up to them. Ty and Aja act all romantic in the airport, and we get lots of Aja talking about how hot Ty is (he is) and how there's a chemistry between them (there is). Oh, they're so eliminated. The editors aren't even trying to be subtle about it at this point. In Siem Reap, the plane lands and everyone (well, except for Ty and Aja) race for cabs. Some teams have trouble explaining to their drivers that they need a particular gas station. Toni and Dallas end up at a hotel, and The Divorcées end up at a regular gas station and run around like idiots, even checking in the bathroom. No clue box in there, girls! Nick and Starr are the first to the right gas station and learn that they have to use a hand pump to fill up the gas tank of a truck with 25 liters of fuel. No big deal. The Divorcées are lost, and their driver is clueless as Nick and Starr get their clue and learn they have to ride in the back of the truck and ride to Siem Reap harbor where they will take a boat to a floating restaurant and their next clue. They hit the road as Toni and Dallas arrive. Dallas makes short work of the pumping as Terence and Sarah, The Frat Boys and Ken and Tina arrive. It seems like it's pretty easy, but the Frat Boys are totally clueless. They ask Ken for help, but of course, he isn't about to tell them anything. Toni and Dallas head out, The Frat Boys are frustrated, and The Divorcées finally arrive. The Frat Boys walk around to watch everyone else do it and see what the trick is, but they can't figure it out. Meanwhile, The Divorcées have no trouble. Man, if those girls can figure it out, that doesn't speak well of the boys. Ken and Tina finish, followed by Terence and Sarah. Meanwhile, Ty and Aja land in Cambodia, and continue to insist they're going to catch up, but come on. It could be the next day for all we know. The Divorcées finish, and The Frat Boys continue to embarrass themselves. Finally they adjust the valve and it works, Dan giving us the episode title when describing how to do it.

In the trucks, Sarah is annoyingly chipper as she enjoys her ride, especially when her driver passes Ken and Tina. Then they catch up to and pass Dallas and Toni. Ken and Tina make up a little ground as their truck passes Toni and Dallas. The Frat Boys finally finish, and wish they could get their act together. Ty and Aja arrive, but you'll note that despite the fast editing, you don't see the two teams cross paths. Starr insists on stopping her truck to ask for directions because she's not convinced they're going the right way. Even though this was a specific driver provided by the show that needed no directions or address. She's a worrier, this one. They also totally lose their lead as all the other trucks totally come up on them before Starr can get back in theirs. A nice aerial helicopter shot shows all the truck racing. At the harbor, there is much racing for boats, and Terence and Sarah continue whooping and hollering as they take an early lead. They're kind of irritating when they're winning. Ken and Tina are annoyed, but whether it's because Nick and Starr passed them or if it's because they called them "Mom and Dad" as they did. Ken and Tina have a slow boat, because they slip into fourth. Ty and Aja finish filling their truck and climb in, but you can see the clouds are a bit darker in the sky. At the harbor. The Divorcées lament the poverty around them, but are heartened by seeing children playing in the water and the culture. Actually, that water is totally brown and muddy, and I wouldn't want to go in it. Hilariously, Terence and Sarah are loving their major lead, but their boat's engine totally breaks down. Heh. Even better, they were almost there. Everyone else passes them as Terence uses the big stick to propell his boat forwards using muscle power since they're still trying to fix the engine. Karma's a bitch... shouldn't gloat so early on. Terence just keeps on pushing while Sarah frets ane we go to commercials.

Ty and Aja are still hoping other teams have hit major problems, as Terence and Sarah struggle with their boat. Well, just Terence, really. Nick and Starr get the Detour clue. In "Village Life," they must navigate their boat to three locations in the floating village picking up items at each one. Novelty teeth from a dentist, a doll from a tailor, and a basketball from a floating basketball court (it's all fenced-in, in case you were wondering!). Also, each team member must make one basket. Deliver the items, you get your next clue. In "Village Work," teams must wade through waist-deep water to retrieve two traps filled with fish and bring them to land to put them in baskets and get their clue. Nick and Starr opt for the quick and very dirty Work, and Toni and Dallas do, too. Ken and Tina opt for Life, and Terence orders them to fix the boat while they get their clue. Obviously, they're not going to do Life since their boat is broke down. At the fishing grounds, Dallas expresses his fears about what might be hiding beneath the surface of the murky water. Ken and Tina get their first item, and Terence and Sarah's boat is still not fixed. Ty and Aja get a boat and head off, but I seriously doubt that this is all going on at the same time. At the dentists, Tina says "Hola, perro," and reminds me how much I hate it when people speak Spanish as a generic foreign language no matter which country they're in. Nick and Starr finish easily, but Toni and Dallas realize they've pulled out a trap with no fish and quickly have to turn back. Dallas is totally proud of his mom, and you know, I'm impressed, too. But my mom could totally kick her ass. Terence and Sarah see Ken and Tina doing the basketball, and decide to do Life after all since they've already found one of the three locations. The Divorcées also see them, but hilariously, don't realize until after they've tried playing some hoops that they need to find a clue box first. Awesome. Way to use your brains to get in the lead, girls! The Frat Boys get their clue and choose Work, and are on their way off when the girls arrive. Heh. Nick and Starr unload their fish and get their clue, which tells them to take a Tuk Tuk to Angkor Wat, which you gamers might recognize as the temple from the Tomb Raider movie. Ken and Tina get their clue, and Toni and Dallas are on their way in third. Ty and Aja opt for Work, and I love that the editors are trying so hard to make it seem like they're still in this. Terence and Sarah head for the temple, and the sun seems to be setting on Ty and Aja. Sigh. Nick and Starr get to the clue box and find a Roadblock. One team member must search the immense temple to find the Chamber of Echoes. There, they tap their chest and create the echo, then pick up a stone tablet with their next clue. Nick, Tina and Dallas take it for their teams.

The Divorcées get bitchy and arrogant again when they realize that they finished their task ahead of the Frat Boys. God, I kind of hate them. The Frat Boys are also annoyed, and while Ty and Aja are behind them, they realize that they're thisclose to coming in last themselves. As Ty and Aja head for the temple, the structure is proving to be quite a challenge to navigate as no one can find the room. Nick gets it first, and the clue instructs him to go to the Pit Stop at another temple. He hides the tablet under his shirt and pretends he hasn't found it as he passes Tina. Sneaky. He grabs star and takes off as The Divorcées head for the temple and wish they could be in the lead so people would take them seriously. The Frat Boys are behind them, and the editors would love us to believe that Ty and Aja are behind them. Dallas finds some help to lead him to the Chamber of Echoes, and Terence quickly does the same. Tina continues wandering, and most awesomely she says "I must be blind" as she literally walks through the chamber, looks outside, then turns around again. Ken wishes he'd chosen to do it himself, and Tina continues wandering in slow motion as we go to commercials.

Tina finally figures it out and realizes she was an idiot, then realizes that she has to find her way back out again. The Divorcée goes in, gets someone to lead her to the chamber, and is already back out again by the time Tina makes it outside. Wow, she really bled some time there. Nick and Starr make it to the other temple and scramble around the grounds to find Phil standing at the Pit Stop with the greeter. Phil pronounces them team number one and rewards them with a trip to St. John. It sounds very romantic... too bad they're siblings. Nick recalls that first leg they came in first, and declares that this means it wasn't a fluke. They can keep winning. Good luck with that one. The Frat Boys arrive at the temple and proclaim it "The original Playboy Mansion." Wow. That's disrespectful on more than a couple levels. Andrew takes it for the team as Toni and Dallas make another good show in second place. I'm beginning to think they're the team to watch out for. A real dark horse. They're consistently doing well week to week. Unless Toni crashes, they could go all the way. Terence and Sarah are standing next to them at the mat and Phil declares them team number three. Ty and Aja arrive at the temple, and sadly, still think they have a snowball's chance in hell. It's tragic, really. The Divorcées and Ken and Tina seem to arrive at the temple at the same time, but take different directions to find the Pit Stop. The Frat Boys get their tablet clue and head for the Pit Stop as Ty takes it while Aja waits. Ken and Tina get to the pit stop in fourth with The Divorcées in fifth. Tina rightfully takes the blame for them falling so far behind, and The Divorcées are upset they're fifth. The editors continue to make it seem like The Frat Boys are struggling to locate the Pit Stop in the temple (love when they ask the other people if they've seen groups of Americans around) while Ty and Aja arrive at the Pit Stop. Like it's not the next day or anything. Naturally, The Frat Boys find Phil and are team number six. Which unfortunately means that Ty and Aja are the last team to arrive. I was really hoping it was a non-elimination, because we're overdue, but it's not. They're sent home. Phil asks them how their relationship did on the race, and Ty declares they've never been stronger, and he's going to move to LA to be with her. They really do seem to genuinely care about each other. And if they can put up with each other on a stressful race like this, they should be good to go.

But wait, there's more! Before the credits, Phil voiceovers that because Terence and Sarah were stopped for speeding, they received a 30 minute time penalty that didn't affect their standing in this leg (meaning Ty and Aja were more than 30 minutes behind them -- obviously), but will come into play next week when they'll start 30 minutes later. That's weird, because I totally think I remember a previous season where someone was stopped by a cop, and I don't remember a time penalty then. Oh well, I don't care, because anything bad that happens to Terence and Sarah is a good thing! Next week, the flirting between Sarah and Dallas heats up again (and he's not even shirtless this time!), and since they're not in the lead anymore, things get tense between Ken and Tina. Finally!
