The Amazing Recap: "Do You Like American Candy?"

Previously on the best competitive reality show on network television, AKA: The Amazing Race, 11 teams set off on a race around the world. Terence and Sarah stole the annual Bickersons crown from early favorites Ken and Tina by proving that the "newly dating" couple can be even more obnoxious to each other than the separated pair. The geeks proved that sometimes brain can at least equal brawn, even if it can't quite beat it. And possibly adorable hippie grandparents Anita and Arthur were sent home after lagging behind for the entire episode. I mean, they seemed adorable. We'll never know for sure, since we only had one episode of them. Of course, one episode is all that it took to prove that Terence is kind of an ass. That was pretty obvious from the start.
What happened this week? Make the jump and find out!
As the episode starts, Phil Keoghan welcomes us again to Brazil, and the fort that served as the first Pit Stop. The ten teams spend the night, and take off 12 hours after they checked in. But first, we have some drama with Terence and Sarah, which seems to be taking place soon after they checked in. Sarah responds to her boyfriend's controlling attitude by saying, "I do want to be with you. I just don't want to not speak to another single person, which I feel like is the only thing that's gonna make you feel like I want to be with you." Also, she's crying as she tells him this. Nice work, dude. Terence's response to her opening up to him? He says he has to go to the bathroom. Sweet. She wants a resolution to their issue, but he says there isn't one and heads off so she can interview directly to the camera about how she can't talk to anyone else without him feeling betrayed. Yeah. Might want to re-evaluate this relationship. Anyway, first to depart is Nick and Starr, at 4:07 AM. They're told to go to the airport and fly to another city in Brazil. Why aren't we going to another country? They have to find a plaza in a small village to get their next clue. Starr gets nervous because the cabbie is going too fast, and Nick explains that he tries to keep his sister calm when she freaks out. Ken and Tina get in their own cab, and he explains that they have to make progress in their relationship or they'll separate for good. Terence and Sarah get a cab, but as they're putting their bags in the back, Terence stands up as the cabbie closes the trunk, beaning him in the head. He's all "Don't you see me bleeding?" and she's all, "no, I don't see you bleeding." Because he kind of isn't. There's a small nick on his forehead by the hairline, and he'll probably have a bump, but it's not that bad. As Sarah tends to his wound (by blowing on it, as he requests), The Geeks take off on their way. Nick and Starr get to the airport and find a flight at 11:30. When Ken and Tina arrive, they decide to try another airline. The Divorcées repeat how they're good at getting out of bad situations like marriages, and hit the road. The teams in the lead learn of a flight at 6:45, but it's full. Terence and Sarah arrive at the airport and disagree which way to check on the flights. Tina begs the woman at the counter to try and find a way to get them on the plane as Toni and Dallas get their own start.
Back at the airport, the ticket agent announces that they switched to a larger plane so everyone can get seats. Tina pats herself on the back, believing it was her persistence that persuaded them to get a bigger plane to fit everyone. Personally, I think it's more likely that the manager realized they had 10 teams from The Amazing Race looking to book flights, which is more like 40 people, when you include the crew that travels with them. Obviously they're going to find a bigger plane so they can sell all those tickets. I mean, imagine how much it must cost to get last minute tickets like that? And then to sell 40 of them? Someone's getting a good bonus this Christmas! Ken's really proud of his wife, and they're all annoyed that Terence and Sarah are going to also get on the plane. Sarah's annoyed that those four have an alliance and didn't even say "hi" to them. The agent warns Tina that the seats are apparently first-come-first-served. The Frat Boys want to change their attitude from "Don't be last" to "come in first." Good luck with that. Ty and Aja are still adorable, and are learning more about each other spending time together instead of long distance dating. Ken and Tina go to exchange money, believing that they'll be able to get to the front of the line because they were first. Anthony and Stephanie take off in a really bad taxi that I probably wouldn't have even gotten into. The Blondes bring up the rear as they vow to do better this time. We'll see. At the airport, Tina continues boasting to everyone that she's responsible for convincing the airline to use a bigger plane for this flight, and The Divorcées are unimpressed. Literally everyone is getting on this plane. Tina tells Ty the same thing, and he and Aja also don't believe she has that kind of pull. The Blondes hit the ticket counter and condescendingly decide to bribe the ticket guy with candy, acting like he's a child and giving us our episode title. I don't know why they did that. He was totally cute. Just flirt. It's easier. And you get to keep your candy. As the airplane gets ready to board, Ken and Tina totally head to the front of the line everyone else has been waiting in for hours believing they should board in the order they bought tickets. Sarah seems to be okay with it, but Terence? Not so much. And the Horns Of Impending Battle on the soundtrack seem to agree. The Geeks aren't thrilled with the cutting either. Terence pulls attitude as Ken defends his wife and those in the back of the line wait for the inevitable explosion. The tension builds as we go to commercial...
... which, with this show, means that nothing happens. The drama that appears to be ensuing right before a commercial break will inevitably be proven to be a whole lot of nothing by the time they come back. And sure enough, when we resume the episode, Terence and Ken make up. In fact, Ken even kisses Terence, defusing the whole situation and making everyone giggle. Heh. Okay, that was kind of cute. Weird, but cute. The teams land in Brazil and start running around the airport like crazy people looking for cabs. At first, they can't even find the exit! Terence and Sarah come out in first place as they all pile into cabs. Anthony and Stephanie once again pick a bum cab that he has to get out and help push while the driver pops the clutch. Why would you even entertain this? And why did it take them so long to get another taxi? As they ride in the good one, Anthony bitches about how the cabs are broken down in this country like everything else here. Ouch. Terence and Sarah find their next clue that instructs them to take a dune buggy ride down the beach to their next clue. Ty and Aja run right past the clue box at first, and I'm surprised because they seemed better than that. Terence and Sarah enjoy their buggy ride, as do The Divorcées. Anthony and Stephanie change their tune a little as they marvel how these people have to live like this, so they shouldn't complain about their own lives, because they should be grateful for what they have. That's a little better, even if they still sound condescending. Everyone gets in their dune buggies. The Blondes wave at some guys on the beach and one of them moons them. Nice.
Phil explains that this Detour is a choice between "Beach It" or "Dock It." In "Beach It," teams will use logs to roll a sailboat across the beach into an inlet. In "Dock It," teams will go to a shipyard where they use a computer to find the shipping code serial number from their clue to find the right section of the shipyard and the specific container with the clue inside. So physical or mental. Everyone immediately heads right for the physical challenge, except for The Geeks, who naturally decide to go with brains over brawn again. I was really hoping Terence and Sarah would have a total meltdown struggling with the heavy logs and pushing the sailboat, but they don't. Oh, and there's a two man crew on each boat that helps them push. The Geeks find the dock and the computer, realizing there are a lot of serial numbers to scroll through. The Blondes also decide they're not strong enough to move a sailboat, and want to go for "Dock It," but tell their buggy driver to follow Nick and Starr, so they find themselves at "Beach It." Heh. They're reading the clue about finding a computer when they see the sailboat and sigh as they realize they might as well do this one because they're already here. The Geeks find their serial number, and boast about how good they are with computers. Um, it's just scrolling through a list. It's not that hard. They head off to find the shipping container as one of them does the "Do or do not, there is no try" Yoda impression. Okay boys, let's not try too hard. On the beach, the closest Sarah and Terence come to a meltdown is when he warns her not to do push-ups in the morning next time because then she won't be too tired to push a heavy sailboat. Um, okay. Because that happens all the time, I guess. The Divorcées overhear them, and wish Sarah would get her act together and kick Terence's controlling ass to the curb. Nick urges Starr to kiss their two sailor helpers, promising the grinning guys another one when they finish. Whoring out your sister? Nice. The Geeks realize that there are quite a lot of shipping containers in the dock, as The Frat Boys act like tools. Terence and Sarah finish first, and get the clue where they take one of the taxis to the next location. But they don't follow the signs to the parking lot full of taxis, and end up in totally the wrong area looking for a cab. Nick and Starr somehow managed to finish second, and happily head to the parking lot full of taxis. The Divorcées finish, but get confused, thinking they need a container before they can go, not realizing it's from the other task. The Geeks find their container and clue, and head off for the next location. Terence and Sarah find a road with buildings and shops, but no taxis. The Divorcées start digging in the sand by a flag thinking there's a container somewhere, freaking out that all the other teams are leaving. Tina starts yelling at Ken as he makes her walk through some water to get to the hill, and warns him that she's not going to let him tell her what to do and stuff. You know, since he cheated on her and all that. The Geeks are in first place as their cab passes Terence and Sarah, who are totally confused, and then they start freaking out as Ken and Tina pass them, too. Ken doesn't want to stop, but Tina reminds him that they should think about if they were in trouble and wanted someone to stop and help them. Terence and Sarah lose their shit as we go to commercial.
When we return, Toni and Dallas actually stop for them, and Dallas tells Terence about the entire parking lot of taxis that they're supposed to use. Terence is grateful for such a "class act" and he and Sarah head off running up the road. The Divorcées finally give up on their container after a few more teams finish ahead of them. In their cab, they calm down enough to realize that the container was for the other task and realize that they're idiots. Pretty much everyone's taxi is passing Terence and Sarah, who finally reach the lot. The Blondes are so proud of themselves for moving the boat, and Anthony and Stephanie are still in last. Terence and Sarah find themselves in ninth place as they get in their cab. They also realize that they're also a little stupid for not reading the clue properly. The Geeks hit the next location, which is a long wall full of graffiti. This is a Roadblock, which is a task only one team member can perform. Phil doesn't say it, but each team member can only do so many, so you have to be careful about giving your stronger teammate too many early on. Anyway, this isn't strenuous at all. In fact, it's a little stupid. Basically, somewhere amongst all the writing on the wall is the location of the pit stop. There are a bunch of ads, and then a list of like, a dozen or so locales. One of which is the right one. There's no puzzle to solve, and no clues to find, and Phil warns that teams who overthink it could be in trouble. All they have to do is give the right name to the painter at the entrance to get their next clue. Bill takes the task for their team, and immediately starts overthinking it, finding meaning in strange symbols and whatever. Nick and Starr find themselves losing their lead as their cabbie apparently doesn't know where he's going. Oops! Bill finds the sixteen names, but having seen a lot of elevens on the wall, picks only the eleventh one to write down. Ken and Tina arrive, and she takes it for the team. Bill then realizes that if he writes down all the names, he can just read them off one by one until he gets the right one. Tina sees him doing this, and Mark smacks Bill in an interview for giving her the solution. That's hardly a solution. It's kind of a lame task.
Toni takes it as Bill starts reading off names until he gets the right one and gets his final clue sending them to the Pit Stop. Tina finishes writing down all the names and goes and does the same thing. The Geeks run for a cab to get to the park where Phil is waiting patiently, but Ken and Tina are hot on their heels. I love when Ken tries to kiss Tina to congratulate her, and she kind of pushes him away so she can read the clue. Heh. The Geeks are excited to be team #1, but Ken and Tina totally pass them at a stop light and don't listen when The Geeks beg to let "the fat boys" have one. As other teams arrive at the wall, The Divorcées tell us in unison that they have learned to read their clue. Unfortunately, they didn't learn their lesson very well because when they arrive, they don't ask their taxi driver to wait like everyone else did. The Divorcées quickly realize their mistake and freak out, which they seem to be very good at. They're not going to last long at this rate. The Geeks and Ken and Tina arrive at the Pit Stop location, and The Geeks laugh at how doomed they are facing off against the former football pro in a foot race for the finish line. There's some struggle to find the entrance to the park to get inside, with much carrying on, but ultimately it is Ken and Tina who make it to the mat first. Phil declares them team number one and tells them they've won some off-road vehicles. Eh. That's okay. If I was The Geeks, I'd be pissed to miss out on a trip, but not an ATV. Phil ignores The Geeks because they don't have as good a backstory, instead asking Ken and Tina why they're on the race. They talk about their future together, and since they're in first place, naturally they're optimistic. We'll see how they feel about each other when they're in a footrace for last. I am glad to see The Geeks doing so well two weeks in a row. Sarah gets annoyed when Terence wants to be all emotional and "take in the moment" with an inspirational kiss when she just wants to go do the Roadblock. Heh. Maybe she will come to her senses before this race is over. Nick starts trying to help Sarah, but quickly gives up on her to check in with the Frat Boy. This time, I'll kind of give it to Sarah that Nick is being rude. Toni finishes as The Divorcées try to flag down one of the taxis that aren't actually coming down the road. Like, at all. Nick is also overthinking it, confusing himself as we go to commercials.
Finally Frat Boy Andrew thinks he's figured it out, but he hasn't. Ty and Aja find themselves in a footrace for the Pit Stop with Terence and Sarah and Dallas and Toni. That's how they arrive on the mat, but Terence invites them all on the mat with them. Because Dallas helped them out with the taxi drama. So it's all good. For now. Frat Boy is still confused, and Nick says he thinks he has it, but he'll come back to him and let him know. Unfortunately, once Nick gets his clue, he and Starr abandon him. In an interview, Nick says that he's not above playing dirty if he's the one it benefits. Nice. He's a little bitchy this one. He should probably watch that. The Divorcées suddenly realize that their taxi is parked nearby, and I'm a little amazed that they're actually stupider than you'd expect The Blondes to be. Frat Boy writes everything down and reads it off, finally getting his clue. The Blonde gets hers, and Anthony finally writes it all down and reads it all off, too. See? There's no strategy or brainpower needed. Nick and Starr come in sixth as Anthony and Stephanie get their clue and realize that there's no way they'll get to the Pit Stop in anything but last. Oops. Spoiler. The Divorcées are hoping for sixth, but Phil tells them they're seventh. The Frat Boys edge out The Blondes to come in eighth and ninth. Anthony and Stephanie know they're last, so it's anticlimactic when Phil sadly eliminates them. Stephanie says it was a wonderful experience, and they're going to move forward in their future together. Anthony says "I have a lot of things in my life to be thankful for. I have my health, I have my parents, I have... you know, my looks. And I have Stephanie." Wow. Really? That's your priorities? You really, really don't want to marry her, do you? Probably ought to let her know that! Next time, altitude sickness messes everyone up, and there is wrestling. No, seriously, Ken is wearing red tights and throwing some woman around a ring. Awesome.

I love your recaps. I watch the show but your recap are just as amusing :D
