The Amazing Recap: "I Wonder If They Like Blondes In New Zealand?"

Apologies for the delay of this recap, but I kept waiting for CBS to release the photos from this episode like the others. They still haven't, so I've included some relatively awful screen captures. Sorry!
Previously on The Amazing Race, teams flew to Bolivia, but first, one of The Divorcées accused Starr of pushing her sports bra off the hotel ledge to its death. Thus began one of the stupidest rivalries in reality television. Nick and Starr wanted Ty and Aja to U-Turn The Divorcées so they could keep their hands clean, which went over about as well as might be expected. Especially after Aja told The Divorcées what their rivals tried to pull. Unfortunately, The Geeks struggled with the Detour, and while Ken and Tina came in first for a second time, failing to read their clue properly saddled The Geeks with a 30-minute time penalty that saw them sadly eliminated.
So who went home this week? Make the jump to read along and find out!

Phil welcomes us back to Bolivia, and reminds us of the rivalry. Apparently, Nick and Starr and The Divorcées are going to keep this nonsense going. Ken and Tina are first to leave, and Tina is thrilled to learn they're heading to New Zealand, although she's whispering for some reason I can't figure out. The camera men already know where you're going. Not sure what the big secret is. Anyway, Phil explains that they have to fly to Auckland, New Zealand, and then drive themselves to Gulf Harbor where they will find a Gordian knot on the pier that they must unravel to find their next clue, which is hidden inside. And I don't mean Gordian knot in a metaphorical sense. No, this is an actual large knot of rope that they have to undo. Ken and Tina remind us that they're separated, but are really starting to work well together and re-bond. Toni and Dallas are off second, and still seem to be enjoying themselves. Ken and Tina arrive at the airport, and since everything is closed, head right for the Internet to look up flights. Terence and Sarah head off, and I swear it looks like she has a little orgasm when she finds out where they're going. In rapid succession, The Blondes, Aja and Ty, Nick and Starr and The Frat Boys follow behind. In the car, Sarah is still freaking out about going to New Zealand, and she and Terence think they've found a good groove working together. Yeah, you're both equally nuts. The Blondes are hopeful they can continue to climb to the top of the pack, and wonder if they like blondes in New Zealand, giving us our episode title. Thankfully, the other one responds that they probably have blondes there, so they're not like, rare or anything. No, seriously, this is what they think. You can't make this up! Back in a more rational car, Ty and Aja remind that they've been dating long distance, so spending this much time together has posed its fair share of complications. Like when she complains that he keeps saying "Bit us in the Butt." Nick and Starr remind that they're serious competitors. Yeah, okay, whatever. The Frat Boys do separate interviews where Dan confesses his desire to take over as the team leader, while Andrew (the redhead) reminds that there's no "I" in team. The Divorcées are the last to get started, and insist they like everyone. Well, except for Nick and Starr, naturally. Sweet. Everyone arrives at the airport, and while most of them head for the public Internet cafe thing, a couple borrow laptops from oddly willing people in the terminal. The Blondes have glommed onto the Frat Boys, who admit in an interview they don't mind helping them because it's good to keep a weaker team in the race with you so you can beat them later. Oh, and they're cute. But you knew they thought that already. The editors try to play it up like The Divorcées are spying on everyone else, and Ken, Tina, Nick and Starr are upset about it, but they're all ending up on the same damn flight anyway, so none of this really matters. The only real drama they can come up with is Ty getting annoyed at Aja's power-trip mood swings. What's cute is after they talk it out and Aja makes up with him by ordering him to give her a hug. They're kind of adorable together.

The Divorcées are happy that they're all bunching up on the same flight, but Ken is naturally annoyed at losing his half-hour lead. The plane lands in New Zealand, and there is much rushing out to the parking lot to find the marked cars. It's also the middle of the night. Terence and Sarah are in the lead, and to celebrate, he does another one of those weird things where he tells her, "Can I have a little love? Can you just touch me for a little? Maybe play with my hair?" And amazingly enough, instead of smacking him in the back of the head, Sarah reaches from the back seat and rubs his head. They're so weird. Some people are struggling with the navigating, like Nick and Starr, who stop for directions. Dallas also forgets which side of the road he's supposed to be driving on. Heh. The Blondes are also lost, even though the guy who gives him directions insists that it's so easy you can't get lost. Terence and Sarah go one way towards the harbor, while The Frat Boys and Ken and Tina go the right way. Terence and Sarah realize their mistake and quickly turn around. Ty and Aja have happily made up, but then she jinxes them by telling him what a good job he's doing. Because that, naturally means he suddenly blows out a tire. Everyone blows past them on the road as Ty realizes he's going to have to fix the flat. Oh, and this makes things get tense between them again. Of course. Aja freaks out a little as we go to commercial...

... Which of course means that as soon as we come back, a friendly motorist pulls over to help them put on their spare tire and get going again. Ken and Tina arrive at the dock first, and as they all find these basketball-sized knots of rope, I realize that untangling them would be a lot easier if it was daylight out. Seriously, it's pitch dark. I don't think they planned this leg out particularly well with the time change and all. The Frat Boys get their clue first, which Phil explains means they must drive themselves to the top of Mount Eden. It's one of New Zealand's famous dormant volcanoes, and the highest point. Tina also notes that this is the first Fast Forward. As Phil explains, there are only two of these on the entire race, and the first team who finds it and completes it can skip both the Roadblock and the Detour and go straight to the Pit Stop. In this challenge, they must go to the Auckland Sky Tower, the tallest structure in the Southern Hemisphere, and climb to the top to "pick up a friend." Ken and Tina race for it, and The Frat Boys are hot on their tail, hoping to beat them to it and get in first. Other teams arrive at the knots as they leave, and The Divorcées find themselves in fourth place as they leave. Toni and Dallas leave as Nick and Starr arrive, and the Fast Forward teams are still neck and neck. Although I'm not sure how close they really are. The Frat Boys still seem to think they're in contention until they find the other marked car in the parking lot and realize Ken and Tina totally beat them, and they have to double back to find Mount Eden. Ken and Tina get suited up for their climb as she remarks on her fear of heights. Ty and Aja finally get to the dock and realize they're in last place. Except as it turns out, they're not. Because The Blondes are still lost.

Terence and Sarah are first to the Roadblock, which tasks one of the team members with matching the tattoo on a card with the same tattoo on the face of a scary-looking Maori warrior. Amusingly, if they're wrong, the warrior will steal their card and run away with it. Terence takes it, and gets annoyed when his chosen warrior takes off. Heh. Oh, also, it's still pitch dark out. That's two visual challenges that have to be done in the dark. Again, not sure this was planned out particularly well. Ken and Tina begin their ascent as Terence gets the right warrior, and his clue. The warrior insists on touching noses with Terence, which I take to be some kind of Maori custom, and it's hilarious because Terence leans back like he's going to bite his face off or something. Heh. Sarah shouts "Kiss him! Kiss him!" from the sidelines. Double heh. Their clue instructs them to find the City Life Hotel downtown and head to the roof where they'll find their next clue. Ken and Tina continue to climb, and Tina is seriously freaking, but to her credit, she doesn't stop. The Divorcées get to Mount Eden, but can't find the access road to the top, so they get out and walk up. Toni takes the Roadblock as Dallas hopes the Maori warriors don't eat his mom. She aces it, loves touching noses, and they're off. Terence and Sarah reach the roof of the hotel and find out they have to use binoculars to look around the area to find a Product Placement Travelocity gnome which they then must go down and retrieve. At least at this point the sun has come up! Tina's getting more nervous as she gets closer to the top and the whole tower is swaying. Eek! Oh, right, The Blondes. They've finally arrived at the dock, and as I said, the sun is up, so they're way behind. Also, they've apparently gone blind, as they walk right past their Gordian knot. The camera man helpfully pans over to it as they walk by, but they don't notice. Heh. They never do.

When we come back from commercials, The Blondes finally locate their knot, and The Frat Boys drive past The Divorcées walking up to the summit. They ask them why they're not driving, and the girls claim "We decided to walk." The Frat Boys chuckle at the stupidity of that statement, and continue driving on. What I don't understand is if they're walking, why not cut across the grass and go straight up? Why follow the road? Take the shortcut if you can. Ah, whatever. The Blondes get their clue and head for the mountain as Ken and Tina reach the top. Tina's all, let Ken grab the damn gnome while she starts back down. Ken is appropriately proud of his wife. The Divorcées and the Frat Boys confront their Maori warriors, and while Christie finishes before Andrew, gloating about how they're ahead of the boys, remember that they still have to jog all the way back down to the bottom. The Frat Boys can just drive. A bit faster. Terence and Sarah find a gnome at the top of a neighboring building and head for it. Toni spies one on the balcony of an apartment building, and they're off. Ken and Tina find out they get to take a helicopter ride to Summerhill, a farm, and the Pit Stop for this leg of the race. Terence and Sarah have a little trouble finding the highest roof, while Toni and Dallas struggle finding the right apartment. They both get the clue off the bottom of the gnome eventually and find out they have to drive to another town to find the Kiwi 360, a local landmark that looks like a giant slice of kiwi. Back at the dormant volcano, Starr screws up her first chance matching the tattoos. The Frat Boys spot a gnome in a park and are on their way back down as The Divorcées arrive. (After first asking outside the hotel, "Can we valet?" Heh.) Starr finishes and heads for the hotel as Aja takes the tattoo challenge. The Divorcées are still looking for their gnome as Nick and Starr arrive, find their gnome and head off. Heh. Karma's a bitch, eh? Ken and Tina enjoy their helicopter ride and remark on how nice it is to see their relationship healing on this race. Honestly, not the result I had anticipated! The Blondes arrive at the tattoo challenge as The Divorcées finally spot a gnome. The Blondes still think they're in the game, but I'm not nearly as optimistic. Ty and Aja spot their gnome as Ken and Tina's helicopter lands. At the mat, the greeter introduces himself as Phil's father! Awesome! Phil must be thrilled to spend a leg back home. Ken and Tina then learn that as the winners of this leg of the race (their third in a row!), they have won a week's vacation in Rio De Janeiro. But I'm not jealous.

Ty and Aja get their gnome, and we cut to The Blondes looking for theirs, but I don't think they're really that close together. Terence and Sarah are the first to the giant kiwi slice to get their clue. He literally takes the envelope from her and says "Babe, you can't open the envelopes. You're very bad at it." What a sweetheart. Phil explains that this Detour is a choice between "A Matter Of Time" or "A Matter Of Skill." In the Time challenge, teams drive to a kiwi orchard where they have to crush enough kiwis in a vat to produce 12 quarts of juice. Then, they each must drink a glass before getting their next clue. Yuck. It tastes like feet! In the Skill challenge, they drive to Blokart Heavan and each must assemble a Blokart. It's basically a go-kart with a sail attached. So it's like windsurfing on pavement. Once assembled, they each have to ride three laps around the track, then they get their clue. So one is slow and safe, and the other is fast and dangerous. Terence and Sarah go for the kiwis, and she can't stop squealing in excitement. Of course, once she's in, the mood changes. The vat is lined with sharp rocks to crush the fruit, and the kiwis themselves have rough husks. So it's not the most comfortable thing in the world. Toni and Dallas have also opted for the kiwis, and as they arrive, Terence admits it's not the easiest thing in the world to do. Meanwhile, The Blondes finally find their gnome, and I wonder if they had extra gnomes planted around. Because if there was only one for each team, it's hardly fair for the stragglers, because if you're the last team, there's only that one gnome left. As opposed to the first team, who had eight to choose from. The Frat Boys also opt for the kiwis because they have big feet (?), but Dallas and Toni are struggling because no juice is coming out of their spout. Terence and Sarah finish and swallow their foot juice, getting their clue directing them to the sheep farm Pit Stop. Toni and Dallas realize that they could be there forever because there is no juice coming out, so they bail and opt for the other task. As they leave, the Frat Boys arrive, and Toni jokes that it's loads of fun. Nick and Starr also arrive at the kiwi farm, and all realize that it really hurts. Terence and Sarah arrive at the mat and are proclaimed team number two.

Toni and Dallas arrive at the Blowkart place, and set to work assembling their karts. Nick and Starr bail first, but the Frat Boys are right behind them as The Divorcées arrive. Naturally, they're all bubbly smiles as they claim the kiwi husks are exfoliating their feet, and it's great. They're so annoying. Toni and Dallas finish assembling their karts and start doing their laps. It looks a little scary, because they do go kind of fast. It also looks like a whole lot of fun. The Divorcées must have had a good spout, because they're done and off to the Pit Stop. Dan isn't very mechanical, so Andrew has to assemble the karts for the Frat Boys. Nick and Starr begin their laps, and we hear the attendant warn not to put your hand out on the ground as you go. So naturally, that's what's going to happen. These editors aren't subtle. Ty and Aja start squishing kiwi fruits as The Blondes opt to head for the kiwis and The Divorcées make it to the mat as team number three. Crazy! The Frat Boys are still struggling with assembly as Starr totally wipes out. She's actually crying as she suspects she's broken her arm, sending us to commercials. I'd suspect this means she hasn't broken her arm, but as it turns out, no answers are forthcoming. Maybe next week Phil will explain.

Starr gives Tina a run for the money in the gutsy broad competition as she insists on finishing her final laps crying the whole way. Toni and Dallas finish in fourth as Nick and Starr finish their laps and The Frat Boys try to finish assembling their carts. As The Frat Boys start their laps, Nick and Starr drive off, and Ty and Aja really struggle with the kiwis. What I don't understand is why Starr is driving when she's so clearly injured and should probably go to a hospital. At first I thought maybe it was a stick shift, and Nick didn't know how to drive one of those, but sure enough, he notices his sister is in serious pain and finally offers to drive instead. What a sweetheart. Seriously? Why didn't you insist she rest in the back from the start? Jerk. Not filling their quarts, Ty and Aja bail on the kiwis and decide to do the other task. The Frat Boys head for the Pit Stop, and Andrew interviews that while Dan wants to be the leader, he realized this leg that he needs Andrew for things like assembling Blokarts, so he'll probably shut up about it now. Nick and Starr come in fifth, and Phil notices her injury. I assume now she'll receive off-camera medical attention. Ty and Aja start assembling their Blokarts as The Frat Boys finish in sixth, ahead of where they thought they were. "It's our best finish!" Dan exclaims. Way to shoot for the moon! The Blondes start crushing kiwis as the sun goes down on this all-day leg. Ty and Aja struggle with the correct assembly of their Blokarts, specifically a knot that isn't quite to the attendant's liking. Eventually, they finish their laps as The Blondes finish their feet juice. Again, the editors seem to want us to think these two teams are neck and neck, but I really feel like The Blondes were way behind. Unless Ty and Aja really lost that much time with the kiwis before bailing. But as expected, they're seventh, and Phil informs The Blondes that they are last, and as such, are eliminated from the race. They cry and hug each other, Phil's Dad joins in to give them a big hug, too. Phil looks bemused as his pop gropes the pretty girls. Heh. In their brief exit interview, The Blondes talk about how they got to know each other on this race, but I have to say I never even learned their specific names. They were totally interchangeable and never developed a personality beyond being a little slow and doofy. Whatever, good-bye.
Next week, Terence gets a little karmic payback for his jackholery as he gets pulled over by a cop, and The Divorcées spread their bitchiness out to other teams, making fun of Dallas' hair. He is not amused. And neither am I! Making fun of you people is my job! Back off!
