The Amazing Recap: "That Is Studly"

tar09.jpg

Previously on The Amazing Race: Teams flew from Peru to Kazakhstan, and Starr and Dallas continued their flirtation. Nick and Starr raced Terence and Sarah to a Fast Forward, but in the end, it was Terence's vegetarianism that made them unable to eat the bowl of sheep's ass soup. Dallas had a lot of fun with the Detour that had them dress up like a cow, while The Frat Boys kept screwing up. Big surprise there. Having won the Fast Forward, Nick and Starr came in first for the fourth time in a row, while Terence and Sarah were unable to overcome the delay incurred by backing out of the FF and having to go back to the original task, and were sent packing. Unfortunately, while taking a food challenge when you're a vegetarian was a stupid move, The Frat Boys have made stupider moves, and made them more often. So why are they still in the race? What will it take to get rid of them? Is it wrong of me to wish that they'd found themselves in a little Hostel-style torture in Russia this week? Make the jump to relive this week's adventure in Eastern Europe!

We pick up where we left off in Kazakhstan, where Phil gives us a brief history lesson on the country before sending the teams off on the next leg of the race around the world. He wonders if Nick and Starr's flirtation will prove distracting. Probably not. They both seem pretty focused. He then wonders if The Frat Boys will continue to make crucial mistakes. Yeah, that one I'm gonna say is a pretty safe bet. Nick and Starr depart at 9:21 PM and learn they must fly to Moscow, Russia. There, they'll travel by taxi to a monastery where they will receive their next clue. As they head to the airport, Nick reveals that it's his birthday, and Starr made him a T-shirt. It's a nice thought, but it's also just a T-shirt where she used a Sharpie to write "Today is my birthday." They remark on how well they're working together, and Nick admits that if they were in last, they might not be getting along so well. Hm. Let's put that to the test, shall we? Oooh! Spoilers! They get to the airport and find a travel agency that gives them information on the earliest flight to Moscow At 10:47, Toni and Dallas grab a cab to the airport, and he makes a point of haggling with the driver to bring the price down a bit before getting in. This is not a bad idea, as we will later see. Also, as we will see now that nearly hour and a half lead that Nick and Starr had doesn't make a lick of difference, because Toni and Dallas get to the airport and catch up. Dallas interviews that he loves his mom and really wants them to come in first for a change. They're sick of always being runner-up. But that's what makes me root for you harder! Ken and Tina are off at 11:17, and she yells at Ken to yell for a taxi. Why not put your own lung power to use? Ken makes a remark on how the taxis are fleecing them, and the cousin to the Rattlesnake of Doom, the Rattlesnake of Foreshadowing, makes an appearance on the soundtrack. Tina interviews that they're starting to clash because she thinks Ken's too relaxed while she's all insane. I'm paraphrasing here, but you get the point. You'd think Ken would be able to disagree with her by pointing out how her focus has caused them to misread directions and clues and screwed them up left, right and center, recently. Then again, I'm not sure she'd listen anyway. Back at the airport, Nick and Starr catch up to Toni and Dallas and find they're going for the same flight. Dallas and Starr go for a walk around the airport, and interview how they really do kind of like each other. It's interesting, because there's usually not time for showmances on the race. But good for them. Nick interviews that Starr is kind of strong-willed, but he thinks Dallas can give as good as he gets. Dallas complains about Nick and Starr winning constantly, and the soundtrack tries to ramp up the non-existent competition between the teams. Ken and Tina find the travel agent and the information about the same flight to Moscow. The Frat Boys get started at 12:41, which is over an hour behind the previous team, but again, it's not going to matter. Sigh. They mention that they'd left their sneakers behind at the children's theater when they had to dress like a cow last week, and thus had to steal the complimentary slippers from the hotel. You know, the cheap-ass foam kind? Crazy. Not sure why they weren't allowed to go back to the theater on their own time after checking in at the pit stop. That just seems unnecessarily cruel. But since it's The Frat Boys, I'm willing to overlook it. The Boys get in a cab and remark on how no one expected them to be in the final four. Yeah, me neither. At the airport, Dan haggles with the cab driver, and worries about the money situation. Everyone laughs at "Team Dandrew" when they show up in their slippers. Dallas points out a shoe store in the airport that is actually open. They do some browsing and realize that the sneakers are really expensive. Well, because they're in an airport. They end up buying some sneakers, and hope they've got enough money left for this leg.

The teams board their early morning flight to Moscow, and when they land in Russia, the typical mad rush for cabs ensues. This time, though, it seems hard for some teams to snag one. The Frat Boys are actually the first to land a cab, and worry about not having enough money for cabs. As everyone else finds taxis, Starr asks their driver if he speaks English. He says "nyet," but I think she thought it sounded like "Yeah," because both she and Nick continue talking to him in English. Toni and Dallas hope they have a better driver than Nick and Starr, and Ken worries about their own cab when he and Tina get in. Wacky Russian hijinx music plays as the teams enjoy their scenic tour of Moscow. Well, Nick's not enjoying it so much because he's not in first place. As they speculate about where everyone else is placed, Dallas jokes with his mom that The Frat Boys could be on their way to another country right now. She laughs and tells him to stop, but then we cut to The Frat Boys worrying as their driver pulls over to ask for directions. I love these drivers who are so desperate for a fare that they'll take the job even though they don't know where the destination is. Ken and Tina are also having trouble, and their driver stops to ask a bus driver for help. Nick and Starr and Toni and Dallas all arrive at the monastery at the same time, and race inside. The ladies have to put a scarf on before they can enter. They're all a little hyper and Toni interviews that because it's a church, you have to have a little respect. So she's a lot calmer about it than Nick, who looks about to burst a blood vessel he's so hyper. They get their clue, which directs them to cab it to Kolosok Camp, a decommissioned military camp where they'll search the grounds for their next clue. The two teams get in their cabs and head for the camp, confident in their lead. The lagging teams finally get directions to the monastery and get going as Toni interviews in her cab that these taxis are very expensive and they're bleeding money. The Frat Boys get to the monastery and get their clue, closely followed by Ken and Tina, and they all get on their way. Toni and Dallas easily find the camp, and find a Detour. Phil explains the two choices this time around. For both tasks, teams have to don a traditional military uniform, including wrapping their feet in cloth instead of socks. Remember that for later. In "Boots," teams join a squad and learn a traditional parade march. When they've got it down, they do a lap around the grounds, and if they do it right, they get their clue. In "Borscht," teams must serve a bowl of borscht to 75 hungry soldiers. Phil warns that it seems easy, but sloppy teams could screw it up. Dallas also thinks 75 is a lot of people, so they opt for "Boots." He and his mom get dressed, and note that the uniforms all have names on them, and they're clearly the first ones to arrive. They learn how to wrap their feet up as Nick and Starr struggle to communicate with their driver. Starr is totally freaking out and on the verge of tears and Nick tries to calm her down. Ken and Tina arrive at the camp at the same time as The Frat Boys, and Ken notes that while the Boys do often do well with the traveling, it's the tasks they always screw up on. Both teams opt for the marching. Andrew has marching band experience. Of course he does. Nick and Starr are still hopelessly lost, and they're rightfully getting nervous about being in last place as we go to commercials.

tar09_02.jpg

When we come back, we rewind a little with Starr and Nick worrying before moving on to find Toni and Dallas have dressed themselves correctly. They start rehearsing the marching, which basically just seems to have exaggerated arm movements with each step. Tina worries about getting dressed in front of The Frat Boys, and then the two teams struggle with the foot-wrapping. Well, mostly The Frat Boys. Toni and Dallas go on their march around the camp, and seem to be enjoying themselves. I think that's why I find them so refreshing -- they're usually having fun. Ken and Tina start practicing, and she's already harping at him. Dan's dressed, but Andrew is struggling with wrapping his feet, and Dan suggests they give up and do the other task. Ken and Tina take their lap, and she really enjoys wearing the military uniform. I bet she did. I can totally see her barking out orders. Oh wait, I have. Dan and Andrew argue as Nick and Starr finally arrive and Toni and Dallas finish okay and get their next clue directing them to the Zhukovsky Bakery and their next clue. As they change back into their clothes, Dallas remarks on how hot it is, but how excited he is they're in first. Dan and Andrew give up on the uniforms, because Andrew couldn't do the boots. Toni and Dallas are thrilled when they pass Nick and Starr on their way in. Ken and Tina finish and get their bakery directions. Nick and Starr get their uniforms on as The Frat Boys tell them it was hard, and head out to their field kitchen. Ken and Tina are still friendly towards Nick and Starr, assuring them that the marching is totally easy and they'll be fine. That was nice of them. The Frat Boys read that they're supposed to wear a chef's hat and apron to serve the borscht, but I'm pretty sure when Phil explained this task, they were supposed to be wearing the military uniform regardless of which option they chose. Nick and Starr get their uniforms sorted and head to learn the marching while Andrew suddenly reads the rest of the instructions and The Frat Boys race back to the tent to don their uniforms AGAIN. At least they're aware of how stupid they are. "Dan and I have made more dumb mistakes," Andrew interviews. "A compilation video needs to be made of all our mistakes throughout the race. It would be the best thing ever." At least they can laugh at themselves. As Nick and Starr march around the camp, she interviews that while cabs and such are out of their hands, the tasks are something they can control, so that's why they excell at those. Dan and Andrew finally get their uniforms on, and the editors would like us to believe that Nick and Starr are finishing at the same time. Nick and Starr get their clue and head to the bakery as The Frat Boys try to march. And seriously, I couldn't stop laughing, and neither could the other soldiers. I believe Andrew when he says he had marching band experience, but I'm not sure what the hell is wrong with Dan. He looks like... I don't even know WHAT he looks like. words can't describe it. He's all off the beat and lurching forward like he can't walk. The Frat Boys do it over and over and over and over again as the other soldiers can't keep a straight face. Dan admits that the marching is not up his alley because it's "music and art based" And he's "sports and TV-based." They continue failing miserably as we go to commercial, and I urge you to watch this video to get the full effect of Dan's spastic marching.

When we come back from commercials, The Frat Boys continue to struggle with Dan's lack of rhythm. It's not a lack of rhythm. It's a lack of functioning motor skills. At least they realize how pointless this is and give up to do the borscht task before they waste their time trying to do a full lap. Toni and Dallas think they've found the bakery, but they're wrong. Ken and Tina are also on the hunt as are Nick and Starr, though they're much further behind. Toni and Dallas find the bakery, but she has to keep him from running inside, right past the clue box. Phil interrupts our regularly scheduled program to explain this Roadblock, which tasks one team member with hefting 50 55-pound bags of flour into a bakery and arranging them horizontally. The clue asks who has a strong back, so clearly Dallas takes this one. After reading the details, Dallas grabs two bags at a time and brings them into the bakery. Inside, the awesome lady at the counter is so excited to be on TV and speaks good English as she informs Dallas that the way he dropped the sacks on the floor "won't do." They have to be layered flat, not just heaped in a pile. "Follow the instructions," she barks. Heh. Toni encourages Dallas by telling him no one is stronger than him, but suggesting he try carrying one at a time so as not to pass out from the strain. Dallas refuses to listen, and keeps pushing himself. Ken and Tina arrive and Ken takes it, though he's seeing how tired Dallas is already. As a former football player, Ken's pretty strong himself, but Dallas refuses to give up. They're both covered in flour at this point, and Dallas is pretty wiped. Toni worries about her son pushing himself too hard. Where are Nick and Starr? Oh, they're still fretting over their cab driver. The Frat Boys get their vat of borscht and start ladling it out to the hungry soldiers. At least they're having fun with it and not yelling at each other and freaking out. According to the captioners, Ken drops off his 23rd bag while Dallas drops off his 32nd. So he's really kicking ass here. Meanwhile, Nick and Starr remain at the mercy of their cabbie and The Frat Boys start naming some Russian tennis players as the only Russian they know. They finally finish and hop in their cab to head for the bakery, although they're coming to the realization that they're not going to have enough money for all these cab rides. Nick and Starr remain lost. Ken really made up a lot of time, but Dallas completes his task, and the baker gives them their last clue. I love the way she says "So you have finished. Congratulations." with that condescending tone like she's totally unimpressed. Wonderfully awesome. Teams must make their way to Neskuchny Sad Park at the center of Moscow. Why do the locals call it a "Fun Garden?" They have to find a library in the park. Toni and Dallas seem to have a good driver, because we never see any confusion on his part. Ken finishes too, and they head for the Pit Stop as well as Nick and Starr arrive. As they pull away, Ken wonders how Nick is going to be able to do it. He's not a big guy. In fact, when he drops off his first two, the lady at the counter remarks, "He's not fit." Hee! Oh, also, Nick and Starr totally cut their shitty cab driver loose. Of course, the Rattlesnake of Doom tries to warn them this is a bad idea. Toni and Dallas worry about keeping their lead as Ken and Tina hope they can catch up. The Frat Boys love their fast driver, but I suspect he's not going to be very thrilled with them pretty soon. Starr coaches Nick through the task as The Frat Boys vow not to be counted out. Nick finishes his task, but sure enough, they can't easily find another cab. Dan takes the flour task for his team, and proudly declares that he can do the dumb, "he-man" tasks. Nick worries about Starr agressively jumping into traffic to hail a cab. Try waving. Not a lot of cabs on the streets where they are, as it turns out. Dan keeps hauling sacks while Starr keeps trying to find a taxi. Andrew is so impressed at Dan's studliness hauling the flour, and gives us our episode title. Nick and Starr double back, bleeding time as they try to find a cab. The Frat Boys get their Pit Stop directions as Nick and Starr finally hail a cab. I'm not sure this is as close as the editors would have us believe. Of course, Nick and Starr hit yet another hurdle when this cabbie proves to be just as useless as the one they ditched. He pulls over to call for directions as Starr freaks out about being last.

tar0903.jpg

When we come back from the ads, Nick and Starr get back on their way in another cab and lament their crappy cab luck. Meanwhile, The Frat Boys are pretty sure right now that they're not going to have enough money to pay their cabbie for driving them around for six hours all day. Toni and Dallas find the correct gate to enter the park, as do Ken and Tina. Star continues freaking out as The Frat Boys remain hopeful. Toni and Dallas are having trouble finding the library. It's a pretty big park. Ken and Tina also get directions, but it's Toni and Dallas who land on the mat first, and entreat Phil to please declare them team number one. Phil is more than happy to tell them they've won a trip for two to the Dominican Republic. It sounds like a bitchin' trip... aside from the helicopter ride. That just sounds scary. Toni is so proud of her little boy. Who isn't that little anymore. Ken and Tina are team number two, and they're thrilled to be back in the game. They're also happy to find that they're getting along better than they'd thought they would. Nick tries to calm his sister down, because she's freaking out the cab driver with her crying. Actually, the driver looks pretty fed up with them. Nick apologizes when they get out. Unfortunately, The Frat Boys can't get going because they don't have enough money to pay the driver. Nick and Starr are kind of hopelessly lost within the park, going to completely the wrong areas, while Dan tries to haggle with the cabbie. Dan even tries giving him the $100 sneakers that he bought at the airport. He even takes them off, but awesomely, the driver just pushes them back with his foot. Hee! Finally Dan takes the last of his cash out of his wallet and holds it up. The driver bitterly tosses his cigarette butt at Dan and takes the cash before stalking off. Nick and Starr are convinced they're last, but Phil tells them they're third. The Frat Boys finally reach the mat, and Phil tells them they're the last team to arrive. "I'm sorry to tell you..." he says, pausing for dramatic effect, "you're still in the race." I mean, it was time for another non-elimination leg. Why do they group them all at the end like this? Anyway, Phil warns them about the Speed Bump, the extra task they'll have to perform in the next leg. The Frat Boys remain high-spirited, declaring that they're the underdogs, and everyone wants the underdogs to win. Um, not me so much.

tar09_04.jpg

On the next episode, The Frat Boys' Speed Bump looks to be making them do some Russian dancing, so with Dan's lack of coordination and rhythm, that should hopefully be the end of them. And in other news, one of the teams loses their Passports and all their money. We see shots of all the teams looking stressed and worrisome, so there's no way of knowing who this terrible fate befalls. Is it too much to hope that's The Frat Boys, too?

And girls who like girls who like stuff!
