Retrophilia: Chaaaaarge!

masterchargesm.jpg

retrophilia (ret troh FEE lee uh) n. 1 An intense attraction for things of the past. 2 a weekly series for popsucker wherin the irrepressible Wootini reveals the horrors of the past to the present to avoid making the same mistakes in the future.

Christmas is almost upon us, and regardless of how you celebrate, there's one thing you can be sure of: It's expensive. So how in the world do you intend to pay for all those presents you bought for everyone? Well, this unusually attired couple has the answer. And no, don't worry -- their freakish appearance has nothing to do with what they're selling. Well, not really. It's just creepy to get your attention. Make the jump if it worked!

That's right -- when you can't afford it, charge it!

You've gotta love how the ad copy boasts about how you can buy all kinds of things with your Master Charge, and how the monthly bill consolidates all your spending into one statement so it's easier to keep a record of your budget. And one check will pay for all of your many purchases. What they don't mention is how if that one check you're writing doesn't actually pay for all of your monthly purchases, they're gonna gouge you a new one with interest charges.

But by all means, join these Children of the Corn in whipping out your Master Charge card at any given moment. You, too, can become a financial zombie scarecrow just like them! (And you thought the creepy scarecrow couple was just because it was fall -- no, there's a deeper symbolic meaning... at least I think there is...)

This ad appeared in 1970, and I'm sure by now these two have just about paid off their bill.

I dunno, that mix-master looks expensive... they probably got another 12 months left on that puppy. :)

Ugh...Credit card bills...As if we aren't plagued with enough debt as it is now. Car bill, cell phone payment, car insurance, gas, food, etc...I'm so happy I don't owe anything on any credit cards.

Having $1000 saved up in an emergency fund would help you out like you would not BELIEVE. Much better to dip into that and repay it instead of having to charge with a credit card for when your car brakes go out or when you're unexpectedly let go from your job.

And girls who like girls who like stuff!
