Retrophilia: Mattel Me What You Want For Christmas

mattelpreschoolsm.jpg

retrophilia (ret troh FEE lee uh) n. 1 An intense attraction for things of the past. 2 a weekly series for popsucker wherin the irrepressible Wootini reveals the horrors of the past to the present to avoid making the same mistakes in the future.

Now that Thanksgiving is past, it's time to start thinking about Christmas shopping. Looks like this typically seventies couple is getting ready to wrap up a Christmas present for their little one. (Oh, and because it's the seventies, you know it's "Christmas," not "holiday" -- political correctness hadn't been invented yet.) What could these two be getting ready to put under the tree? I'll give you two hints: 1) It's not going to be easy to wrap and 2) I totally had one of these when I was a kid.

Make the jump to see if you guessed right!

I know I'm dating myself here, but come on -- some of you have to remember that shopping cart. With the big, thick plastic groceries that were just like, vague outlines? It went great with the Fisher Price cash register with the giant plastic coins! And I remember the orange plastic handle was all rough texture, probably to offer a better grip than if it were smooth. It was super sturdy, too, as I recall. They knew how to make 'em back then. I also love how the caption insists that the "Tuff-Stuff" Play Shoppin' Basket is "perfect for girls and boys." Just because there's a girl on the package, don't go getting any sexist ideas. It's the seventies. The boys can do the grocery shopping just as easily.

I also remember the "Tuff-Stuff" Play Drill. There was a wind-up knob on the other side of it, and after it was wound up, you would pull the trigger and the drill bit would spin around. Just like daddy's! (Minus the cursing) I think it also came with interchangeable bits, but I'm not sure. My memories are a little hazy.

I even remember the "Jack-in-the-Music-Box" that would spring open at the end of "Pop Goes The Weasel." Made of metal, like real toys should be. None of this sissified safety plastic. When I was a kid, we had real metal toys that could maim. Toughened you up!

I don't remember the "Fun O'Clock," probably because I was so smart I already knew how to tell time. And I never had the wheelbarrow that I can recall. Huh. No manly outdoorsy activities for me. Just go grocery shopping. And they wonder why I turned out the way I did! Also, please to note the Affirmative Action-style casting for this particular ad. Sure, the whiter-than-white couple gets the primo spot on top, but the African Americans get a sizable photo and placement wrapping their own present. And that Asian father seems to be getting quite a kick out of that Jack-in-the-Box! See, it's all covered... or at least as many minorities as actually existed in the seventies.

That very shopping cart was my older sister's most favorite toy in the world around 1980.
