Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
But sometimes it's not. And sometimes a cigarette can't measure up to a cigar, so ad men have to go out of their way to make sure they drive their point home. Make the jump and see if you can pick up on the subtle innuendo of this cigarette ad...

Whatever could that fishing pole be symbolizing here? Hm. It's on the tip of my tongue. Give me a minute...
And "Every inch a real smoke?" Really? Really? "Camel's got swagger -- yet it's smooth." Are they talking about the cigarette anymore?
I love that the ruggedly handsome sports fisherman smoking a Camel wasn't quite manly enough for them so they had to go and throw in the giant fishing pole. Subtle. I wonder if there's another ad in this same series featuring a baseball player with his big, er, bat...

Also notice the hand on the belt? The fingers (though curled) are pointing towards his groin...and old advertising trick.
...suddenly, I want a cigarette...
Is it wrong that I laughed at the 'skilled watersportsman' in the caption on the left? Oh God, what has the internet done to me...
