Retrophilia: Presto!

meattoastersm.jpg

retrophilia (ret troh FEE lee uh) n. 1 An intense attraction for things of the past. 2 a weekly series for popsucker wherin the irrepressible Wootini reveals the horrors of the past to the present to avoid making the same mistakes in the future.

What could this be? Oh, it's a very helpful kitchen gadget. One that actually also has a modern day equivalent. Mind you, being that it was the '70s, this one is a lot uglier, even though it technically does the same kind of thing. It also has a much less appealing name. But then, like I said, it's the '70s, so things always seemed sort of... off, you could say. Make the jump and you'll see what I mean!

That's right, it's the Meat Toaster. Brought to you by Presto! What a great name! I mean "Presto," not "Meat Toaster," obviously. Because when you think of meat, you think "broil," not "toast." At least, that's how my brain works. But not those super geniuses over at Presto! And good thing, too, because otherwise we wouldn't have this fantastic invention!

I mean, seriously, how awesome is this? You put your meat between the two racks, then just slide it vertically into the toaster. It cooks it from both sides, so it's twice as fast, and you don't have to worry about flipping it over in the middle. So convenient! And all those fatty juices just drain right out into the handy drip pan. Which I'm totally sure isn't a fire hazard at all, even though it's probably right near the heating coils. Plus, you've gotta love those old-fashioned appliances that are made out of metal with those dangerously sharp corners. It's a wonder any of us made it to adulthood!

What I also love is that in the actual ad copy, they refer to this appliance as "The Presto Vertical Broiler," which sounds much better, but clearly isn't as catchy for ad copy, hence "Meat Toaster." That grabs your attention... although possibly not in the way they intended.

Also, while sometimes I see ads for these kinds of appliances from my youth and recognize the products, I think I can safely say that my parents never owned a Meat Toaster. Can't live without my modern George Foreman Grill, though! Love that thing!

That's crazy! The concept sounded so ridiculous that I never even thought to look around and see if it still existed in some form or another. Weird!
