Retrophilia: Geek Toys

alabekitsm.jpg

retrophilia (ret troh FEE lee uh) n. 1 An intense attraction for things of the past. 2 a weekly series for popsucker wherin the irrepressible Wootini reveals the horrors of the past to the present to avoid making the same mistakes in the future.

Oh, but doesn't that girl look impressed! Whatever could this clever boy have done that so impressed the pretty blonde? Yeah, trust me, you're never gonna guess this one. Go ahead and try, then make the jump!

That is the lamest electric guitar I've ever seen. It's a good thing they went with cheap artwork for this ad, because I'm not sure you'd be able to find models who could realistically pull of the excitement needed here. After all, they're models, not actors.

Also, even though it's just line art, it looks like you can only hear the guitar through the headphone he's got stuck in his ear, so I'm not really sure why that other girl's severed head in the background wants to hear him play something. Also, why is that other severed head inspired to make a microscope? I mean, how did he go from "wow, that guitar sure is neato keen -- kinda makes me want to build a microscope!"

I guess I should be putting "guitar" in quotes like they do in the ad copy. At least they're admitting it's not entirely real. Of course, then they turn on the hyperbole again by suggesting "think of the admiring glances!" Sheyah, right. Pull out this "guitar" in school, and the only people who aren't going to be laughing at you are the other nerds who will then be inspired to put together a microscope. Or maybe a periscope, an electromagnetic telegraph, an experimental camera or a diode radio. Don't those all sound like fun? But what the hell is a surveyor's transit, anyway?

And girls who like girls who like stuff!
