America's Next Top Model: "New York's Finest"

cw-antm12-episode1204-container_031932-945f33-500x335.jpg

Previously, on America's Next Top Model: There was a pink plaid Gaymobile, there were makeovers, there was screaming, and there was crying. Mostly from Fo, who didn't realize that her boyish haircut actually secretly made her super-fierce. But at the photo shoot with hottie judge Nigel, Jessica's overconfidence in her own beauty proved to be her undoing when none of the judges thought any of her photos looked at all attractive. Good-bye, Jessica! Enjoy being the prettiest girl again in whatever town you came from! So which model will be kicked to the curb this week? Make the jump and find out!

cw-antm12-episode1204-container_031851-22801a-500x747.jpg

Teyona's photo is up on the wall, and she's understandably thrilled, although realistic about the fact that at some point, her friend Aminat is going to have to go home before her. Aminat is happy that everytime one of these bitches goes home, the house gets a little roomier. Nijah reflects on the judges' comments that she was dead-eyed, and promises to show her personality. Good luck with that one. Who are you again? The critiques are starting to get to Tahlia, who is losing what little confidence she has left, and probably isn't long for this competition. Aminat continues to be the awesome voice of reason with this nugget: "This is New York, baby. This is the time of your life. All they want you to do is just have fun and look good. And be interesting. And if you can't do that, then you deserve to go home." I think I love her a little bit. Tyra Mail warns them to "Mind your P's and Q's... and J." They all figure out this is a runway lesson from Miss J, but to be fair, that was one of the easiest Tyra Mails I've ever seen. Natalie interviews that she has a lot of runway experience because she's already worked for an agency. Wait, aren't there rules against professional models being contestants? Because that doesn't seem fair... oh, wait. We're talking about Natalie. I mean, if you'd said Celia was a professional model, I'd believe it. Natalie? No. Unless she's talking about walking a runway at the mall. The girls all practice their walk on their in-house light-up runway, and Natalie helpfully tells the girls what they're all doing wrong. Aminat thinks Natalie is getting cocky, and would like her to try a delicious slice of humble pie. Allison is really worried about runway, because she has no clue what she's doing. She also reveals that she's one of those models who over-analyze and over-think everything. Oh, so she's that one. Yeah, they never last long.

The Gaymobile takes the girls to a "mansion" where they're impressed by the interior until Miss J steals their attention by gliding down an elegant staircase with a big bouffant hairdo and pearls welcoming them to Miss J's Charm School. Fabulous. She orders the girls to go change, and they don pastel cardigans and pearls. Miss J pours some tea for herself and then demonstrates how to walk elegantly. Celia is in awe of how Miss J literally floats down the runway. She's not all that. Celia does her best, Aminat is okay, Fo is a "wind-up toy," Nijah looks angry, Miss J does a spit take at Kortnie's walk, then makes fun of Sandra's wiggly shoulders. Tahlia is terrible, and Miss J is disappointed. Teyona's not great, and Allison is a disaster. Miss J puts a book on Allison's head to make her walk with better posture, which Allison confesses just made her more paranoid. Natalie has confidence, and Miss J loves her. Even Fo admits in an interview that Natalie had the best walk. Psst! Don't tell her that! It'll just make her more insufferable. Then Miss J introduces Bianca and Chantal from Cycle 9. Even with the long weave, I totally recognized Bianca, but it wasn't until I saw flashback footage of Chantal that I remembered who the hell she was. Apparently, these two have continued working... somewhere... and Miss J has them demonstrate how to share a runway with another model. You have to show respect for them, and not trip them up. At least, not on purpose! Chantal advises the girls to be natural, and Bianca warns them not to overthink it or they'll be stiff. Cut to Allison as the anvils thud to the ground. Anyway, back to the house, where the girls pass the time playing games. London reveals that Truth or Dare is a particular favorite, even though for some reason one of the dares causes Kortnie to stick her tongue in Aminat's nose. Nijah has to do a Carlton dance, but the laughter stops when Natalie's Truth question asks her to say who she thinks had the worst picture besides Jessica. Natalie thinks about it for a while, then names Tahlia. Everyone gets uncomfortable, especially Tahlia, who can feel those last remnants of confidence slipping through her fingers. Nijah tries to cheer her up later, but Tahlia is hella pissed at Natalie, and pretty much hates her now. Later, Tyra Mail declares: "Take it from me, the runway is the worst place for excess baggage." They all pretty much figure out that it's a runway challenge, and that they'll be carrying bags. Then someone speculates that someone could be eliminated immediately following the runway challenge like last cycle, and people start getting nervous. Especially Allison, who continues to practice, desperately trying not to suck.

cw-antm12-episode1204-container_031912-20ecdd-500x335.jpg

When we return from commercials, Teyona comes home with her brand new weave. It's similar, with long waves, but less awkwardly shaped on top of her head. Miss J welcomes them to the runway show and introduces them to designer Jill Stuart. You can tell she's a big deal in fashion if even I'VE heard of her. Miss J also reveals that they'll be walking the runway with oversized shopping bags and reminds them about the runway ettiquete they learned. The girls go to hair and makeup, and Tahlia is determined to do well. Natalie doesn't understand why the other girls are practicing so much, saying they'll just psych themselves out. Once everyone's ready, Miss J introduces them to Ann Shoket, editor in chief at Seventeen Magazine. They then head out to the audience, and the show gets underway. Celia starts the show off, and looks fabulous in a flowy white strapless dress holding shopping bags. There's also a fire hydrant and a garbage can on the runway to avoid as well as passing the model after you. Natalie comes next, and interviews that you have to take risks to stand out. Unfortunately, her idea of taking a risk is to do a little twirl around halfway down the runway. Jill Stuart tells Miss J she thinks Natalie is really pretty, but Miss J just rolls his eyes and clutches the pearls. Miss J was scandalized by that turn. Natalie also voiceovers that if you look at her face you can see how confident she is. You know what I see when I look at her face? Nothing. Blank. Yawn. Tahlia does her best, but she looks terrified, and Miss J hates her turn. London has herself a good time, and Nijah thinks she did a good job for herself, but Miss J's horrified expression would seem to indicate otherwise. Allison is now nervous about literally falling off the runway. Aminat and Sandra have to cross on the runway (of course), but surprisingly, neither sabotages the other. Boo! Hiss! Where are my catfights?!

cw-antm12-episode1204-container_031941-ae70ae-500x335.jpg

Allison finally takes the runway, and somehow manages not to fall off or pass out. Miss J almost seems pleased. Fo is pretty good, and Miss J remarks that she followed his advice. Everyone does the finale walk, and then it's time for judging. Jill Stuart loved that Celia opened the show strong, and also loved Fo's personality. Ann thought Teyona was stiff. Jill thought Allison was cute and quirky, and Miss J notes the improvement. Jill loved Natalie, and thought she was beautiful, but takes issue with that extra twirl she threw in in the middle. Ann thought she was trying to show off the dress, but come on, let's be real. The only thing Natalie was showing off with that twirl was herself. Jill thought Tahlia's walk was weak, and Miss J tells her to have more confidence because she's walking like she doesn't think she should be here. Maybe she shouldn't. Jill thought Nijah was pretty, but needed a stronger walk. There can only be one winner, and it came down to Natalie and Celia. But for some reason, Jill chooses the winner to be Natalie. Seriously? Even with that twirl? I call shenanigans! Natalie gets some Jill Stuart clothes for her trouble. Natalie boasts in an interview that even with her twirl, she was still better than everyone else. Maybe she can spare some of that extra confidence she's got spilling over for Tahlia, who has absolutely none left? Back at the house, Tahlia calls her sister, Marquis, and the waterworks begin almost immediately. Tahlia interviews how hard it is to talk to her sister because she misses her so much. She tells Marquis how rough it is in the house and how she can't be herself, but her sister wants her to let the experience make her a better person. McKey's Life as a Cover Girl goes on, and she apparently needs to look her best even when doing radio interviews with Matt Pinfield. Remember him from MTV? Also, this is the second time they've mentioned the Make a Wish Foundation. Is that the theme for this cycle's commercials?

cw-antm12-fo-container_032102-aef48b-500x342.jpg

Now the girls get a Tyra Mail that says: "Give it your all tomorrow, or you might get thrown under the bus..." Really? That's it? It's like she's not even trying this cycle. Tahlia is feeling better after talking to her sister, and wants to bring this new confidence to the shoot. The girls find themselves standing on a sidewalk outside of Central Park and Mr. J pulls up in one of those annoying double-decker tour buses. I wave at them sometimes. Mr. J explains that they're going to be broken up into groups, and will be given characters to play. The photographer is the delicious Mike Rosenthal. Unfortunately, it's freezing cold, so everyone's all bundled up. Hopefully the foreign country they travel to for the end of the cycle will be tropical! The girls get on the bus, but the cut to hair and makeup is so awkward, there's no way they actually rode the bus there. Hair, makeup and wardrobe is typically insane. Very editorial high fashion and all that. First up are Fo and Aminat, and they're playing brokers on top of the bus in front of some Wall Street buildings. They've got papers, laptop and a cell phone as props. Mike tells them to get into character, and the girls start bantering back and forth, amusing Mr. J and apparently turning out some good pictures. Next up are Kortnie and Nijah, who are supposed to be artists in SoHo. Nijah isn't bringing any energy to the shoot, but finally the girls start interacting with each other, and it seems to improve. Suddenly, it's nighttime, and Celia and Sandra are supposed to be high fashion nannies ignoring their babies. Sandra's wig is atrocious, all stringy blond wisps blowing around, but they must have done well, because Mr. J and Mike have nothing to say, really.

cw-antm12-celia-container_032041-5c91f2-500x342.jpg

London and Allison are portraying snobby upper-East Side socialites in front of the Yves Saint Laurent storefront. Allison has no idea how to be snobby, but London sort of does. Unfortunately, as Mr. J reminds us, they need to be on the same page. Allison interviews that she thought she got it, but apparently didn't, and was probably overthinking it as usual. You think? We finish up in Times Square where Tahlia, Teyona and Natalie are all in a group together, acting like tourists. Teyona is actually eating her prop pretzel during some shots, and Mr. J tells her he doesn't want to look at her half-chewed snack. But when she obeys his command to spit it out, she does it immediately, and over the side of the bus! "Not on somebody!" Mr. J squeals! Hee! As the girls giggle and pose, Mr. J points out that Tahlia actually has some good energy going on for a change and suggests the other two feed off that. Then Natalie starts pantomiming a camera, so Mr. J suggests she try picking up the actual camera they brought as a prop off the floor to use that instead. Wow. Way to reinforce that stereotype, Natalie. Mr. J isn't quite seeing model on set from Natalie. But he's very impressed with Tahlia, which confuses Natalie, who can't understand when she's not the best. Back at the house, Tyra Mail warns of the impending elimination, which sets everyone to worrying. Natalie is nervous, but confident she'll make it through the week. London confesses she gets a sick thrill out of the tension of wondering who will go home. Nijah admits she didn't do great, but it's Allison who seems to be most worried about being eliminated this week.

cw-antm12-episode1204-container_031942-1273be-500x333.jpg

Tyra's "Inner Fierceness" monologue this week is about how "sometimes getting lost is the only way to be discovered." By Tyra, I suppose. It's a dynamic pose, holding out a map dramatically with a child in her lap, but the one standing behind her looks bored and wanting her mom. Also, Tyra's mouth looks weird. Hey, if she can critique the girls, I can critique her! Tyra introduces the prizes as usual, and I always love how the copy of Seventeen Magazine with the Top Model winner on it is only visible on-screen for a millisecond before the cover with an actual celebrity falls on top if it. Although this year, it's Lauren Conrad, so I'm not really sure what makes her any better than McKey. Tyra introduces the usual suspects, drawing attention to Miss J's annoying bow tie gimmick. The guest judge this week is Jill Stuart, who apparently sold her first collection to Bloomingdales when she was 16. Okay, that's actually kind of impressive. "Now let's get this party started," Tyra says. "Hopefully judging is as festive as my colorful shirt." Huh? What is that about? Although there is no evidence to support my theory, I'm choosing to believe that Jill Stuart actually designed that blouse, becuase otherwise it means that Tyra can't go five minutes without making it all about herself. Oh wait, she can't. Tyra sits down and explains that they'll be called up as their group, but will then be broken down individually.

cw-antm12-episode1204-container_031991-1b78fa-500x333.jpg

First up are Kortnie and Nijah, and their shot is kind of dull. One is supposed to be an artist, and the other the muse, but nobody sees that. Nigel says Nijah ruins the shot for him. Tyra points out that Kortnie has that tension she was so fond of demonstrating last week, while Nijah is deflated. Next on the block are Fo and Aminat. Tyra compliments their outfits, and then we see their fabulous Wall St. shot. Everyone loves it. Tyra even says it's Aminat's best shot to date. Celia and Sandra come down, and are also complimented on their clothes. I guess everyone took Nolé's advice from last week to check a mirror before coming to judging. Well, except for Sandra, because Miss J calls attention to her ashy knees. Heh. Sanrda insists she oiled them, but Miss J awkwardly says he wants to spit on his hands and rub them down. Ew! Their photo is the most fabulous. Except I still don't like Sandra's flyaway wig strands. Everyone loves the photo, and compliments Sandra on her very editorial body language. Celia's good, but Sandra steals it. Next come Natalie, Tahlia and Teyona. Tyra congratulates Natalie on being the contest winner because Jill thought she was pretty, even though she threw in an extra twirl that sucked. Their Times Square photo is okay. It's not as editorial as the others because they're all smiling and looking up and pointing like tourists, so they just look like girlfriends dressed in weird clothes. They praise Tahlia for actually seeming genuinely happy in a photo for a change, but Miss J takes issue with being able to see all the way into Teyona's mouth. However, Natalie gets the worst of it, when Nigel points out that he doesn't buy her in this photo. Her expression IS kind of forced. Especially compared to the other two, who are practically beaming. Last up are Allison and London. Their photo is also not great. Nobody's seeing the "frienemies" chemistry in the shot, and Tyra complains that they had the easiest assignment because all they had to do was think of Paris Hilton or Gossip Girl. None of the other girls had such easy reference points. So basically, it's a fail. Nigel is disappointed in Allison, and she admits she was overthinking it. Paulina awesomely compares her to a "hung over Olsen Twin." Hee! However, Nigel compliments London on her expression, which is relatively snobby. Allison IS kind of just doing that big spooky-eyed thing again. Tyra explains carefully that while they were judged as groups, only one girl will be going home. Hey! It's time for a Cover Girls In Action spot! According to narrator Nigel, Bianca has apparently been working in South Africa and being the face of Virgin Island's Fashion Week. Who knew the Virgin Islands had a Fashion Week? She's also been doing print work in New York. It's always funny to me that even though these girls are doing modeling all over the world and working all the time, it still doesn't seem impressive, even when they list their credits all together like this. Bianca did have some nice pictures in her portfolio, though!

cw-antm12-episode1204-container_032002-cde75f-500x333.jpg

Can I just say that I'm a little too excited for Donna Martin's return to Beverly Hills? Anyway, the judges deliberate. Kortnie might have potential, but Nijah is wasting hers. Aminat finally took a really great picture, and Fo was a pleasant surprise. Sandra is fabulous, and Celia lives and breathes modeling. Natalie was pretty but boring, Teyona was all teeth, and Tahlia did a great job for a change. It wasn't a bad shot of London, but Allison can do better. And... they've reached a decision. Tyra announces that the winning girl will actually have the other girl cut out of the winning photo when it's displayed in the house! Heh! And the winner? Sandra. Huh. Cropping Celia out of that shot is going to ruin the composition. Next are Aminat, Tahlia, Fo, Celia, Kortnie, London, Teyona, and Natalie. This puts Allison and Nijah in the bottom two. Allison has weird, quirky looks, but her specialness didn't translate into this photo. Were the earlier shots just flukes? Nijah is beautiful, but she's never had the sparkle from the first week's shoot again. So who stays? Allison, clearly. Tyra warns her not to rely on her big, pretty eyes. She tells Nijah to push and make it work. Well, that's kind of useless. Nijah hugs everyone good-bye, and packs up her crap to go home. She's so boring there's nothing in her exit interview that even makes an impression. But hey, next week, the girls struggle to hold their own in front of a crowd of drag queens. But Celia's halfway there! And OMG — it's Benny Ninja! Love him!
