America's Next Top Model: Put Your Best Face Forward

cw-antm12-episode1205-container_032552-f0d3c1-500x335.jpg

Previously, on America's Next Top Model: The girls had to share the runway at a Jill Stuart fashion show and not knock each other off the catwalk (boo!) and then had to share the frame at their photo shoot, modeling alongside their competition. Nijah couldn't make her dead eyes come alive, so she was booted... but which of the ten remaining girls will be sent home this week? Oh, it's not who they all think should go home! Seriously, this judging ends with a shocker that ranks as one of the all-time awesomest Top Model moments. Make the jump and see if you agree!

Returning from judging, Sandra is understandably over the moon to see her photo on the wall, and while I give her points for using the expression "bomb ass" to describe her picture, she then stays true to form when she declares that her win proves how much better than all the other girls she is, and it's a good thing someone goes home every week because at this rate, there's not going to be room for anyone in that house but Sandra and her ego. Let's see if we can't knock her down a few pegs during this hour, shall we? Upstairs, Fo and Aminat bitch about Sandra, and Tahlia is psyched to have gotten some good feedback, so her confidence level is up a little bit. Later, while the girls are just hanging out, the doorbell rings, and Toccara shows up with some shopping bags and a whole lot of personality. She's brought them designer sleepwear so they can all have a slumber party, but it's mostly so Toccara can tell them how important it is to have a good personality in modeling because that's what the casting agents remember. She goes around the room to have everyone introduce themselves, and Aminat gives as good as she gets. Unfortunately, Kortnie decides to describe herself as an old man comedian in a curvy chick's body as Austin Powers music plays on the soundtrack. Sandra interviews that this is a modeling competition, not a comedy show. Well, sometimes it is. They ask Toccara if she's famous now, and Toccara lists off some of her credits. She leaves off Celebrity Fit Club, though. Tahlia thinks Toccara is an inspiration, especially to her, because as a model with burn scars, she wants to be an inspiration, too.

Awesomely, as they're all sitting around the table eating dinner, Toccara notices Sandra's picture, and learns that it was picked as the best one. Cut to Aminat making a face and giving a "so-so" wave with her hand. Hee! But then even better, Natalie declares that Fo should've had the best picture. Sandra reminds that the judges have the final say, and Aminat interviews that it's a little tiresome how everything is about Sandra all the time. Then it's time for an impromptu walk-off on their dangerously short runway. Seriously, how can you practice your walk when you've only got four feet to do it in? Toccara gets a tour of the house, and then gives a useless interview about how nobody's personalities stand out yet before giving some inspirational words and then taking off. Celia thinks Toccara's visit really perked everyone up, which is good, because Tyra Mail says that "if you can't move to the music, then that might pose a problem." They all know it's a posing challenge, which WE all know means only one thing: Benny Ninja!

The girls travel to The Marquee, where Benny Ninja is waiting for them. He introduces them to a model-turned-DJ, Sky Nellor, who speaks with a lovely Aussie accent. The girls will now use music to inspire their poses, starting with a demonstration by Benny where he offers up various poses as Sky switches from techno to country to metal. First up are London and Sandra. At first, London is a little hesitant, so Sandra is more impressive, but then Sandra loses her shit and starts flailing all over the place while London is more controlled, and therefore declared the winner. Allison and Natalie are both pretty terrible because they each end up dancing more than posing. Teyona and Fo struggle with country music, and Benny suggests they think of smelling hay or horse dung to inspire them. No, seriously, he does. Next up are Kortnie and Celia, and naturally, Kortnie looks hopelessly lost while Celia gets fierce all over the place. Aminat does awesome with some sexy posing to jazz music, while Tahlia struggles a bit. Benny tells her to be more confident, and I guess that was it for what little confidence Tahlia managed to get out of judging last week. Back at the house, Alison tells Ceila that she was super-nervous posing like that in front of everyone, and realizes that she needs to not let her negativity affect her, because that can be a slippery slope. Ya think?

When we return from commercials, the girls all get ready in the morning, then assemble for a Tyra Mail: "Practice your posin' if you wanna be chosen." Pose-off! And or reals this time. They go to a theater called The Mansion, where Benny Ninja is waiting for them on a stage with a man, a man dressed as a woman, and a rack of clothes. Benny reveals that the girls will be posing in clothes designed by The Blonds, the man and "woman" behind him. Two groups of five girls will pose against each other, and the winner of each group will pose off in the finals. The judges? The audience, but there's no cheesy applause meter. The girls head into hair and makeup, and Alison reminds us how nervous she is posing in front of people. Celia is energized by her hair and wardrobe, but Tahlia can barely move in her tight dress, and wonders how she'll pose.

Benny takes to the stage and introduces the girls, ordering the crowd to cheer or boo as they see fit. Allison takes the stage first, and worries they can smell her fear. I guess so, because she gets some boos. Teyona does a little better, and the crowd seems to like her, but Kortnie totally chokes. Sandra admit her shoes were really hard to move in, so she ended up doing simple poses that the crowd kind of hates. Celia rounds out the first heat with some super-fierce posing that the crowd eats up with a spoon. Naturally, Benny declares her the winner. Aminat starts out the second group, and for some reason, they don't seem to like her. Or London, who I think does pretty good. But it's Tahlia who really sucks. One drag queen in the audience looks about to throw up. Yikes. Natalie takes the risk of walking down off the catwalk onto the floor in front of the crowd, which they love. More than they love Fo, who loses out to Natalie in the end. So now it's a pose-off between Celia and Natalie. Celia is determined to win, and starts working her outfit. Natalie can barely stand on the catwalk without falling, so Celia hardly had to try to win. Which she totally does, earning herself an outfit from the collection. Back at the house, Tahlia is really depressed, her confidence in tatters after being booed by the crowd at the challenge. She tells Allison that she wants to go home because she feels like this competition is doing her more harm than good. Allison then shares this news with Celia, who decides that if Tahlia wants to go home, she should, because you have to be stronger to be in the competition. McKey is still having a life as a Cover Girl, but it's still kind of pretty but boring.

Time for another Tyra Mail: "Models aren't the only ones who migrate to New York to make their dreams come true." The girls all think she's talking about birds, but I immediately thought maybe they'd be posing as immigrants outside of the Statue of Liberty. But then I thought, oh, Tyra wouldn't be THAT crass, would she? Yeah, she would. The girls go to hair and makeup not knowing what they're going to be doing, and Tahlia continues to fret about how maybe she should go home because she's tired of sucking in all the competitions. Celia sits next to her in the chair, watching her break down, and interviews that it's not fair for Tahlia to take an opportunity away from a girl who actually wants to be here. Mr. J welcomes them to a ferryboat, and reveals that they will, in fact, be modeling as immigrants on Ellis Island. I will give them credit for using an old-fashioned camera to shoot an authentic old-fashioned photo of them in period garb. There's just one catch. Because the exposure will be so long, the girls will have to hold their poses loner than usual. Also, Benny Ninja will be in the photo as their husband (hee!) and some miscellaneous street urchins will be playing their kids.

cw-antm12-episode1205-container_032571-72ad4a-500x369.jpg

First up is Sandra, and Mr. J introduces photograph Brian Edwards, who shot the natural disaster shoot last cycle. He also reminds Sandra to hold her pose for the camera, but when they start shooting, Sandra is so still that she's boring. Mr. J is totally disappointed. So much so that when Brian shoots the last shot, he immediately asks, "Who's next?" Of course, that's probably just the editors toying with us, but it's still funny. Fo steps out next, and looks pretty in her costume, although I feel like her poses were a little dull. Mr. J thinks London looks like Kate Winslet in Titanic, and London laughs because that's exactly what she was thinking. Mr. J is impressed that London becomes her character immediately. It doesn't hurt that she can really rock the retro look.

cw-antm12-episode1205-container_032612-67f5f8-500x747.jpg

Now I guess the weather turned or it's getting too dark out, because they have to move inside for the rest of the setups. Natalie is next, and honestly, there's nothing to say about her. And it's not just me — Mr. J doesn't really say much aside from telling her to point her toe more in one pose. So let's move on to Teyona, who gives some hot attitude that Mr. J likes a lot. Kortnie is excited to be playing an immigrant because her family actually were immigrants at one point. Mr. J doesn't like her poses because she looks like a sack. He also interviews that it took Kortnie forever to get into the various poses. "This boat sunk on the way to Ellis Island," he mutters under his breath. Tahlia steps up and actually looks really pretty and Mr. J informs her that she's really improving week to week. I think the sadness in Tahlia's eyes was really working for this shoot. Celia goes on set, admitting that she knows that photo shoots aren't her strong point, so she has to bring it. Aminat is next, but while Mr. J likes her poses, he tells her that she needs to work on her face, because there's nothing there. Last up is Allison, who loved her hair and makeup, and does look like a period waif.

Back at the house, Tyra Mail tells them that they're about to be judged. I would hate it if I was in the middle of something and had to run downstairs for the reading of THAT Tyra Mail. It's always the same. Sandra is worried about judging this week because she didn't get good feedback at the shoot, but is still confident that the person who will actually go home this week is Tahlia. Upstairs, Tahlia is still stressing out over the competition, but feels better that she thinks she got a goot shot at the shoot. Celia, Kortnie, Natalie and Allison all talk about Tahlia, and think that she should go home if she keeps whining about how she wants to go home. Natalie doesn't appreciate how Tahlia keeps saying she wants to quit until she starts doing well, then changes her mind. Celia is clearly the ringleader here, and doesn't want Tahlia to take a spot away from someone who really wants it.

This week's lesson in the Rules To Owning Your Inner Fierceness: "As a top model, you'll have to travel to many foreign lands." oh, thanks. That was REALLY helpful, Tyra. Anyway, on to judging. Tyra proves she can count as she announces there are only ten girls left, then reminds them of the prizes up for grabs before introducing the usual suspects. The guest judge this week is Benny Ninja, and his presence is making Tyra blacker than usual. I love when she gets like this. First up to be judged is Teyona, but first Tyra takes a moment to explain the concept behind the Ellis Island shoot to the judges. Well, except for Benny, I suppose, since he was there. I think Teyona's photo is kind of stiff, because she's just standing there, upright, amongst a bunch of kids, but if you look at her face, it's really good. So, pose? Not so much. Face? Excellent. Next up is London, and they don't like that she's bending her legs behind her so she looks stumpier than usual. Her face is really pretty, but she's looking off to the side dreamily while everyone else is looking at the camera. Tyra points out that in a group, you should all be facing the same way, mugging with the judges as an example. For a model, Nigel's "funny face" isn't very good. I'd send him home this week. Or to my home. Preferably my home.

cw-antm12-sandra-container_032672-e124f4-500x633.jpg

Sandra takes the stand, and her photo is terrible. She's got Teyona's stiff upright pose, but without the strong face to offset it. Sandra looks bored. Or lost. Nigel points out that she keeps giving them profile shots, and that she's also looking off while everyone else is facing forwards. Benny twists the knife a little deeper as he adds that Sandra had the same problem with the posing challenge, looking like a deer in the headlights. Allison's shot is really good, because her wide, sad eyes totally work in this milieu. The judges all kind of agree that Allison looks like one of the kids instead of their mother, but they also agree that this is her most editorial work to date. Yay Allison! Aminat's photo is really strong, and everyone loves it. Nothing really more to say about that one. They have the same problem with Fo's shot, where she's disconnected from the kids like London.

cw-antm12-tahlia-container_032681-f01dfc-500x395.jpg

Natalie is up next, and when they comment that she resembles Kiera Knightly in her photo, Tyra immediately launches into a terrible British accent to tell her she looks stunning. Please, Tyra, no accents. I beg you. Kortnie's picture does NOT get raves. They declare her "sour" and ask what she was thinking about when she was posing. Tyra again brings up this cycle's "smile with your eyes" which is the whole tension thing, and urges Kortnie to push! Hard! Then it's Tahlia's turn, and they LURVE it. It really is very pretty. The editors helpfully give us a couple reaction shots from Kortnie and Celia looking stunned that Tahlia, of all people, is getting a good evaluation. Paulina tells her that while she's giving the most attitude of any of the girls in the photo, in person, she's a hot mess. They make fun of her clothes and hair before sending her back. Last up is Celia, who is applauded for winning the posing challenge and is wearing her prize. I would've picked another dress, but what are you gonna do? They throw Celia's photo on the screen, and it seriously takes me a minute to even find her in the shot. The girl in white on top totally pops more than Celia, and the judges tell her so. Tyra likes her pose, but says there's no story in her eyes. And now it's time for deliberation! "And when I call you back," Tyra says ominously, "I will announce which one of you has been denied entry." Really, Tyra? Really? That's borderline right there.

Hey, there's another Cover Girl in Action! Nigel says that April from cycle 2 has been modeling in Hong Kong before moving to New York City where she's been trying to break into acting and hosting. But sadly, one of her credits they list is her stint in a previous cycle where she came back to advise the girls on how to do a good interview.

Okay, deliberations. London isn't relating to her background and has no legs, but her eyes look magical in the light. Sandra is "boring as homemade soap" says Miss J, and they think she's a dud. Allison is adorable, and has a very specific look that you either love or hate. Kortnie isn't model quality, although Nigel thinks she's gorgeous. Paulina loves her legs, but Miss J is horrified because she's knock-kneed. They like Aminat's photo in close-up, but not so much as a wide shot. They like Fo, but not so much in this photo. Celia's pose is too similar to the one she did in Nigel's lighting shoot a couple weeks ago, and she's getting lost in her photo. Nobody can believe that unconfident little Tahlia was able to pull off such a fabulous photo. Natalie is dull, and needs a personality to match her beauty. Teyona is great in photos, not so much in person. And they've reached a decision.

The girls all march out and Tyra stands ominously before them. And the girl with the best picture is... Tahlia. She's as amazed as everyone else. Oh, and I forgot to mention that London looks really fabulous here in judging. I really like what she did with her hair. Also still in the running are Teyona, Allison, Natalie, London, Aminat, Celia, and Fo. Which gives us a bottom two of Kortnie and Sandra. Tyra tells them both that they're really pretty, but Kortnie's poise and attitude in judging disappears when she's in photos, and Sandra is disappointing because she seems to be resting on her beauty. Who stays? Sandra. Because she's good for drama in the house. She's gonna be around a while. But then... but then! Then something uneblievably awesome happens that stands with some of the most incredible moments in Top Model history. I'm talking second only to the cycle where the girl fainted during judging.

As Sandra takes her place with the other girls, but before Kortnie can get her good-bye from Tyra, Celia totally out of nowhere steps up next to Kortnie to address Tyra. "Tyra, with all due respect to you, I think there's something you should know," she says, "about what was said this week by Tahlia. Before you send Kortnie home, I think you should know that Tahlia did express that she did not want to be in this competition anymore, and she did not feel this was a wise career move on her part." Tahlia seems to find the whole thing mildly amusing now that she's holding her winning photo, but the other girls are all reacting with shock and horror, basically. "It's quite unfair for someone who doesn't even want to be here to remain in the competition," she finishes. Stone Cold Tyra replies: "You know what I think is unfair? That you're saying this, and not Tahlia. Tahlia did not say that to me. She did not say that to the judges. So what is truly unfair is you saying that to me." Shamefaced, Celia meekly apologizes as Tyra informs her, "The judges have made their decision. Take your place." Awe. Some.

Celia stands shamed as Tyra hugs Kortnie goodbye and reminds her to "push." Because "push" and "tension" are the new "smile with your eyes." Everyone looks sad to see her go, but Celia looks like she could literally die on the spot. Kortnie is sad to say good-bye ,and is sorry that she'll never be able to realize the potential she thought she had. She also adds that she also doesn't think it's fair Tahlia is still around when she doesn't really want to be there, and is glad Celia spoke out. Yeah, I don't think Celia is feeling very pleased with herself right now! Kortnie also hopes the house doesn't go too crazy on Tahlia when they get home. Good luck with that one, because the trailer for the next episode looks to be all about everyone in the house going apeshit on each other. Will there be any modeling next week? Who cares? Bitchfight!
