America's Next Top Model: "Acting Like A Model"

cw-antm12-episode1207-container_033552-71a2f1-500x333.jpg

Previously on America's Next Top Model: After Celia opened up her big trap at judging about Tahlia wanting to go home, Kortnie's elimination tore the house in two. Well, basically Aminat and Teyona went off on Allison and Natalie. Mr. J taught everyone how to deliver solid facial expressions in a challenge so when they did a beauty photo shoot with colored powder splattered all over their faces they could deliver. Unfortunately, while Celia landed in the bottom two so Tyra could teach her a lesson in not being such a big-mouthed rag, it was Sandra who once again had a horrible photo and was sent packing. Not that it changed her high opinion about herself! There's only eight bitches left, so who goes home tonight? You might be surprised! Oh, no you won't. Make the jump and you'll see for yourself...

At the house, the suspicion is that the Cover Girl commercial is coming up, and Allison worries about her ongoing critique from the judges that she's only got the one facial expression. Celia remarks that Allison never smiles, and then offers up a toothy grin of her own that someone says makes her look like a horse. Heh. Then it's time for dinner, and since it's turkey and there's a pie, I'm guessing it's Thanksgiving. Especially considering the freezing cold temperatures in New York City in recent episodes. It's nice of the production to give the girls a holiday meal, but that would suck to spend Thanksgiving eating takeout from a restaurant, as nice as it probably was. Nothing can compare to a home cooked turkey with mashed potatoes and gravy and now I'm hungry. Hopefully the competition will be wrapped up in time for Christmas! Everyone starts cleaning up, and Natalie relaxes in a chair as she says "You're doing a good job, guys." Teyona gets all bent out of shape like Natalie was talking to her like she's her maid. Aminat tells Natalie she has to wash the steamer, and gets annoyed when Teyona tells her about the "good job" comment. Aminat is all "and she wonders why people think she's snobby," and Natalie interviews that she was obviously joking. Then, in the kitchen, Natalie literally says, "I'm sorry I live in a nice community and you don't. Can I help where I'm from? No, just like you can't help where you're from." She's kind of saying this to Fo, but it's clearly not at Fo. And just, wow. Natalie has clearly never had to live with roommates ever in her entire life. Girl has no social skills. Aminat overhears this, and Natalie tries to tell her it's too complicated to explain what she was talking about, and then insists she was just joking. But Aminat continues to believe Natalie is just a stuck up bitch, and keeps antagonizing her as she walks up the stairs to get away.

cw-antm12-episode1207-container_033492-5f6884-500x333.jpgTyra Mail bring the girls together, and it says "Tomorrow you will be molded into a fine piece of Clay." The capital "C" is a dead giveaway, but they automatically believe they're going to be sculpted or posing as sculptures. Of course, it's clearly an acting challenge when the Gaymobile drops them at the Harlem Stage Theater where Paulina is waiting for them. She explains how even as a model, you have to be able to act because you have to be whatever type the client is looking for. You need to be fierce even if your dog just died. Paulina calls up the girls in pairs to have them read a sentence with different emotions. Celia and Aminat are first, and have to say "I have never said that to anyone." Aminat's bossy is really just kind of angry (surprising she couldn't get it), but Celia's is appropriately pitiful. Teyona's "I have no idea what you're talking about" is less shocking than just crazy mad, and Natalie's threatening version is exceedingly mild. Hilariously, Paulina comments at this point, "Alright, some of you maybe will be more of like, beauty models." If that! London's "You've got to be kidding me," is pretty pitiful (it's supposed to be) and Fo is nicely threatening. Allison tries to do "You've got to get out of here," but is too weak to do arrogant. Tahlia can't do ecstatic, probably because she doesn't even know what the word means. Paulina tries to demonstrate, but kind of just comes off as a loon. Tahlia can't even jump up in the air with any kind of enthusiasm. It's really pretty sad. "God, it's like trying to jog in mud with you," Paulina sighs. True dat! Tahlia interviews that she knows she's got it in her, but I kind of think maybe she doesn't. Paulina sums things up by saying some of them were worse than others, and singles out Tahlia as needing the most work. She then says it's time for their challenge, and gives them a script for a scene about a has-been model going in for a fitting, urging them to study hard. The girls all sit around the theater memorizing their lines, and London reveals that she comes from a family of actors, so it's kind of in her blood. She's even got a black scarf wrapped pretentiously around her head, so she's halfway there! Tahlia looks a little nervous of all those words on her script as we go to commercials. She does know how to read, right?

cw-antm12-episode1207-container_033532-fa1f8d-500x750.jpgWhen we come back, Allison reminds us of the challenge, and reveals that in the script, there are notes giving each line a different mood like "aggression" and such. Probably a good idea, because without being told what emotion to give, these girls wouldn't have the first clue what to do. Although I guess that could've been pretty funny to watch, too. Paulina reveals that they're obviously not going to do this scene with each other, and introduces them to their famous acting partner who has sold billions of records, appeared in Spamalot on Broadway, and is also a close personal friend of Tyra's. Yeah, that's right, it's effing Clay Aiken! Who Fo thinks is a genius simply because he's appeared on Broadway. Um, I'm pretty sure there's not an IQ test at auditions, but then again, I've never tried, so maybe there is. Clay says hello, and then London takes the stage with him. The scene is basically a has-been model coming into a fitting with all kinds of attitude, all "do you know who I am? How dare you!" and that sort of thing, and Clay plays the designer, who doesn't put up with any of it. London does surprisingly well, if a bit over the top. Paulina is impressed. Aminat is a little angry, and Paulina agrees with Clay when he says he noticed that Natalie has a little bit of an attitude. Allison practically disappears on the stage, but Fo practically explodes off of it. Yowza! Tahlia is awful. Just awful. I give her credit for trying to impart some emotion to her lines, but there's clearly nothing at all behind the movements. Of course, Celia is divalicous, fiercing up the stage. Paulina was impressed with her comedic flair, but wishes Celia could bring that spirit to her photos. After the montage, as Paulina reveals that the winner of the challenge will get $5,000 worth of merchandise from Joe's Jeans, Celia is confident she did really well. Well, yes, but London did better. She's so thrilled she screams, and then covers her mouth, embarrassed. She's excited to have won because that's a lot of clothes, but back at the house, it looks like just a tiny little shopping bag. Are those jeans that expensive? All the other girls are jealous of London, who sadly reveals that she didn't even try anything on because she knows she's gaining weight, and doesn't want to think about it because it'll affect her performance in the competition. So she lets everyone else have them? The hell? Wow. That's generous. Personally, I would've kept them for myself and dieted my way into them. And if I couldn't, I still would've kept 'em. Wow.

After the vultures feed on London's scraps, there is Tyra Mail, and Aminat reads, "Do you play well with others? It's time to find out." And once again, they all bark up the wrong tree, suspecting that they're going to pose with hot guys. Yeah, no. The Gaymobile drops them at a studio where McKey is pretending to film a Cover Girl commercial. You know it's fake because the Top Model winner doesn't get to do the actual commercials. That's for the real spokesperson. Mr. J introduces them to the former winner, and she introduces them to some new Cover Girl foundation that she has to give the awkward speech touting. Mr. J reveals that the girls will be broken up into groups for their commercial, and will have to work together. Hee! They'll get a script to study during hair and makeup, but there will be a TelePrompTer they can use if they get stuck. He urges them not to rely on it too heavily, but come on — these are models we're talking about. And not even real models yet! The teams break down as such: Aminat, Teyona, Celia and Allison are group one, and group two is Natalie, Fo, London and Tahlia. The bitches head into hair and makeup, studying furiously as they're turned into potential Cover Girls. Allison really wants to do well, because she realizes she needs to do well. They all seem to struggle saying the complicated name of the new foundation. McKey tries to make small talk, asking the girls where they're all from, and after some mention Texas and Louisiana, Natalie says "California," adding with a dismissive wave, "all these little hicks over here." Wow. Everyone laughs, and it's clear Natalie is trying to say it like she's joking, but the thing with jokes like this is that the joke is really just the cover for how they really feel. So when Teyona interviews again about how Natalie is just a big snob who thinks she's better than everybody else, it's kind of hard to argue.

The first team hits the set, and Mr. J introduces them to the director before warning them they're only going to get a couple takes before the next girl gets her turn. Basically what happens is the lead girl models for a photographer before noticing the video camera and talking casually to it like a friend about how fabulous this new Cover Girl foundation is. She walks over to a makeup table where the other three are sitting. They each interject a brief line apiece, and then they all pose together to do the "easy, breezy" line to finish it up. Celia's first, and while her hair makes her look a little Bride of Frankensteiney, Mr. J is pretty impressed. Even that chick from Cover Girl with the severe bob, Elyssa Starkman, liked it. Teyona is next, and totally doesn't remember to look at the camera like she's supposed to. Mr. J points this out, and Teyona rightfully feels like a dumbass. Her second try is better, although a little too much hand gesturing. Aminat takes her turn, and looks and acts a little severe. Also, remember when Tyra got on Danielle for sounding a little too ghetto? Aminat's worse. She also flubs up her lines, even with the TelePrompTer. It's pretty awful. Mr. J likes Aminat's personality, but she loses that when the camera starts rolling. Backstage, Tahlia asks McKey who the quiet one was in her season, and McKey admits it was probably her. Tahlia says she's the quiet one, and really wants to break out of her bubble. Stop being such a drip, then. Tahlia interviews that she's got to step it up, and she's totally getting the elimination edit this episode. Back on the set, Allison is a hot mess. Not only does she get so into posing for the still camera at the beginning of the commercial that she forgets she's supposed to be interrupted to shill for Cover Girl. And even when she does start giving her spiel, she forgets to look into the camera, too! Yikes. Mr. J says she was flat, and she closed with the same wide-eyed open-mouthed expression she's been giving in her photos. Aftewards, the girls enjoy some food, and while Aminat thinks they should all be happy because they rocked it, Allison isn't quite that confident.

McKey's life as a Cover Girl continues, as Sutan does her makeup and she tells him how she's been going to all these fittings for this fashion show. Are we ever going to see this alleged fashion show? Props to Sutan, though, for finally landing a cameo in one of these commercials. Even if it's not an actual commercial, because immediately following each one of these every week is the actual Cover Girl commercial with official spokesmodel, Drew Barrymore. Ah well, I'm sure he still got paid!

The second group is getting prepared backstage, and everyone struggles with the name of the product as well as their other lines. They're trying to rehearse together, and seem confident going onto set. Natalie is super-confident, at least until she flubs her first line. Hee! Sometimes it's hard for them to walk and talk at the same time. Mr. J says Natalie gave them average, which seems to be what she's been giving them every week. Fo looks great, but she's got a really bad case of mush mouth. Mr. J asks Tahlia to give them more happy even though she's just in the background. Wow. She can't even be background? London pulls a Whitney by going way over the top and Mr. J and Elyssa compare her to a door-to-door salesman. Heh. They urge her to reign it in, but the second one is still pretty cheesy. Tahlia says she got her lines down, but when she starts, the whole walking and talking derails her and she can't even read the TelePrompTer. She's frustrated with herself, but Mr. J is actually less concerned with flubbing the lines than Tahlia's complete and utter lack of personality. And this time, when the four girls try to pose together at the end, Tahlia has to squeeze between London and Fo so she can be seen. It's so awkward. Oops. Mr. J warns Tahlia that this might seem hard, but this is nothing compared to what it would be like in the real world. Back at the house, it's time for the elimination Tyra Mail. Tahlia reads it to the rest of them. Foreshadowing? That night, Allison tells Celia she thought their commercial was good, but she wasn't. Celia feels safe, and actually thinks she could be a Cover Girl.

Time to judge some bitches! Tyra welcomes them to panel, again wearing something lovely. Hey, wait a minute! Where's this week's Guide To Owning Your Inner Fierceness? Now my fierceness is going to be off-schedule by a week. Don't toy with me like this, Tyra! She introduces prizes, and this time McKey's Seventeen cover is immediately replaced by one with Taylor Swift, so I guess Lauren Conrad's out? The guest judge this week is Clay Aiken himself, and she rattles off some impressive statistic about his record sales that I honestly couldn't care less about. Oh wait, I could. Anyway, Celia is up first, and everyone salivates over her fashion choices again. Seriously, how many clothes did this girl bring? Tyra runs Celia's best take, and it's pretty solid. The girls all seem pretty amused to see themselves on TV. Wait until they see this! Everyone is impressed with Celia, and Paulina informs everyone how great Celia was at the teach with getting into character. Clay adds that she did the same thing in her commercial, which was nice. What isn't nice is this weird hair color that Clay has chosen for himself. It's too dark and red. And dying the eyebrows to match makes them look exceptionally odd. Tyra brings things down to Earth, though, when she comments that Cover Girl is all about youth, and when Celia walked up to the other girls at the makeup table, she looked like "their auntie." Ouch. Next is Teyona, and Tyra gets all ghetto for some reason as she introduces her commercial. Huh? The first thing I noticed was what Nigel points out, which is that when Teyona smiles big like that, her eyes go all super-squinty. Tyra also takes a moment to make fun of her posing at the beginning of the commercial. They bring Allison up next, but Miss J interrupts everything to point out that she's wearing the same dress she wore to an earlier panel. The editors helpfully split screen a shot from the first episode (she had brown hair), to prove him right. Tyra notes that if it was something basic like jeans and a tank top, that would be okay. Miss J wants to have Allison and Teyona change outfits, and Tyra suddenly proclaims that after judging, they have to swap while they deliberate. Huh? Okay, let's go to the commercial. Allison's ad is super-flat, and Tyra calls it "punishment" to watch. Clay tries to find a bright side by saying she sounded better than during the competition. Tyra says she looked pretty, but her voice was just sad.

Aminat is up next, and as I mentioned before, they totally get on her for the voice, and how she has to speak clearly and pronounciate. Challenge winner London steps up, and she's wearing another stupid headband. Ugh. I hate those things so much. Nigel calls her slouchy and drab, and while I don't disagree, I also feel like the wardrobe department sabotaged her. The other girls had much nicer outfits. Tyra thinks London sounded a little angry, and goes all ghetto as she demonstrates what she heard. What is with all the ghetto speak this episode? Oh, but as if that wasn't bad enough, Paulina closes by telling London not to wear those unflattering shorts anymore, and the cameraman totally zooms in on her ass she turns to rejoin the other girls! Rude! Natalie takes her turn, and Tyra likes her outfit. The commercial? Not so much. They all agree that London stole this one from Natalie with her cute poses in the background. Clay points out that she didn't relate to the other girls. Tyra thinks that Natalie was technically proficient, but she doesn't remember her because she wasn't fun and flirty. Fo takes the stand and is nervous because she thinks she got tongue-tied, and sure enough, her commercial is a little mush-mouthed. The judges snicker at her stumbling over the lines, and Nigel and Paulina both agree that Tahlia actually looked really pretty in Fo's ad. Tahlia is up last, and Tyra chuckles that her dress looks like she's going to a spring wedding, but quickly adds that it looks pretty. Tahlia knows she struggled, and Tyra runs the ad to prove it. It really is quite dreadful. Not as bad as last year when the girl fell down, but bad. They all like Fo in this one, and found Tahlia mean and angry and old. In fact, Miss J cracks everyone up by declaring that Tahlia looks like "when Moses parted the Red Sea, you were on the other side fishing, that's how old you looked." Seriously, Clay can't stop laughing in that high-pitched girly laugh of his. Tyra tells Tahlia that she looks the most of all the girls like what Cover Girl is looking for, but what's coming out of her mouth doesn't measure up. Tyra stops everyone from telling Tahlia how she needs to figure out a way to get some confidence, and says it's time to deliberate. But first, this week's Cover Girl in Action is Asperger's sufferer Heather from Cycle 9. She's living in Chicago and is signed with Elite. She's doing modeling while also studying videogame art. That's kind of cool.

Okay, time to deliberate. They love Celia's fashion sense, and think she did best in the commercial. Miss J wonders if she did the best only because everyone else was so awful. Nigel is impressed that she could read the TelePrompTer without him realizing that's what she was doing. Tyra takes this opportunity to declare that she never read a TelePrompTer one during her whole five years with Cover Girl. Paulina reveals that she was never even allowed to speak, which makes me wonder why she was chosen to supervise the acting teach. I'm just saying... Teyona is super-photogenic, but not so much telegenic. After Nigel explains this, Paulina snottily tells him that's the first smart thing he's said, and finally she agrees with him. Allison is adorable, but she's too quiet. Paulina says that she looks like a doll, and has a similar personality. Plastic and empty-headed? Ouch. Nigel can see Fo more as an actress than as a model, but Tyra points out that her acting in the ad was weak. Clay reminds Tyra that she liked Fo in the background, which means she at least has potential. Tahlia is very beautiful and the camera loves her, but she does not love the camera. Clay has only met her twice, but already recognizes Tahlia has terrible issues with her self-esteem. Nigel thinks that things with London have gone pear-shaped, and he's not just talking about things going wrong. He's making a rude comment about her body type. Paulina admits that she never saw the potential they all saw in London until she saw her face up close at the teach and was impressed by its beauty. Aminat can't speak, but Paulina thinks that was the least of her problems. Tyra agrees that this wasn't her medium. Paulina was impressed by Natalie's commercial because she was so bad at the challenge. They all kind of agree that she looked beautiful, but remain unimpressed. So who goes home?

The girls return to line up and sure enough, Allison and Teyona have swapped outfits. So random! But Tyra likes giving orders, so it's not like this came out of left field. Tyra takes her position of power, and informs them that all of their commercials were pretty awful. But one of them rose like flotsam from the wreckage, and naturally, that's Celia. Best of the worst, as it were. Also safe this week are Natalie, Teyona, Fo, London (who looks justifiably annoyed when she comes up to take her picture, and has to force herself to laugh when Tyra points out her surly disposition), and Aminat. This puts Allison and Tahlia in the bottom two, and I have to admit I wasn't sure which way it would go. They both kind of have the same problem. Allison is adorable, but only seems capable of one facial expression, while Tahlia is pretty, but has no self-confidence whatsoever and is a total drip. So who goes home? Tahlia. Tyra reminds Allison to try and develop another look, and then says good-bye to Tahlia. As she packs up, Tahlia admits she held back, which killed her, but that's just who she is. On the way out, she reminds us that she's a burn survivor, and hopefully inspired somebody having gotten this far in the competition. Next week? The girls have to direct the photo shoots, but will they sabotage their competition? And Ciara shows up to star in a photo shoot with the bitches. Sorry, Ciara, we've already got a Rihanna. Try again, please.
