America's Next Top Model: "Take Me To The Photo Shoot"

cw-antm12-episode1208-container_033902-8162e7-500x333.jpg

Previously on America's Next Top Model: We had to endure watching the girls endure their first acting lesson and subsequent challenge, performing opposite the legendary thespian Clay Aiken. And I'm not just calling him a thespian because he looks like K.D. Lang. Then they all had to go and do a Cover Girl commercial, which most of them butchered beyond recognition. Seriously, it was ugly. In the end, Tahlia's self-confidence took one last hit as Tyra eliminated her because as much as the camera loved her, Tahlia never seemed to love the camera all that much. She just wanted to be friends. So who's going to get the axe this week? Make the jump and find out all the gory details!

At the house, Allison is confiding in gal pal Celia that she's really worried about the fact that she only seems to have one expression. She knows that her giant doll eyes are her best and worst feature, because while they're very awesome, they're also very limiting. Celia tells her to just work her muscles, and then says that in order to get a good photo, she always has to think about sex. Okay, then. Teyona's sweeping up as she remarks on how they all kind of sucked at the commercial, and Aminat agrees, recalling her own mush-mouthed performance. Aminat interviews that she has it in her, she just didn't show it when the time called for it. Um, I'm pretty sure that's exactly when you are supposed to show it. Just for future reference. Then there is Tyra Mail. "A Top Model knows how to be direct. Love, Tyra." Teyona is already getting excited that they will be going to their foreign destination, but clearly this isn't how that is ever revealed. Tyra has to do her whole big production number. Anyway, later that night, Celia reminds us that London was a street preacher by asking her about it. Yeah, they did pretty much drop that after she mentioned it during auditions. And I can totally see why, because as London talks about how she feels like Jesus is speaking through her, it's really kind of off-putting. And it makes her sound like a whackadoodle. London interviews about how she's been struggling to maintain her relationship with God while she's in the house. Yeah, those long-distance relationships can be a bitch.

The girls walk themselves over to a studio where Mr. J greets them and tries to stop everyone from making fun of his vague job on this show by insisting that a creative director really does have to do stuff, and is going to make the girls act as creative directors for each others' photo shoots, just to prove that he really does do more than just sit around being orange and making bitchy asides. Mr. J introduces Seventeen's Ann Shoket, who will be helping him judge this competition. Why her? Well, because the winner of this challenge will appear in an editorial fashion spread in Seventeen. The client for the shoot is South Pole Juniors, and Aminat is already like, "Dude, I wear South Pole all the time. I've got this in the bag." She tells them the client wants the feel to be "street style with attitude." Really? How unoriginal. The girls are psyched, because they want to be in Seventeen magazine. Mr. J splits them all up into teams, and they've only got an hour to get their model ready for the set. The girls find makeup artist Sutan sitting backstage knitting himself a blanket so he can take a nap if this gets too boring. No, seriously, that's what he tells them. Christian Marc asks Allison what to do with Aminat's hair, and Natalie works on Teyona's hair and makeup. Natalie has given Teyona crazy big hair, but it's still not as distracting as the ugly thin rope headband that Natalie is wearing. God, why do those things even exist? As they go on set, Mr. J explains that they get to shoot 15 frames, and then Natalie has to edit the film and choose the best shot. Natalie has a vision of Teyona walking with confidence, and awkwardly tries to direct her movement. Mr. J whispers to Ann that you have to be able to walk without actually walking, and he is proven right when the final shot Natalie chose looks like Teyona is just tipping over instead of walking.

cw-antm12-episode1208-container_033882-ed33ae-500x751.jpg

Allison is really getting into it, describing the complex makeup concept she has for Aminat, and Mr. J is impressed to finally hear Allison actually speak more than a few mumbly words at a time. Allison wants to prove herself, and Mr. J loves the way that Aminat looks. She does look kind of awesome. The only problem with the shoot is that Allison is awkward at the directing, and keeps moving Aminat around too much, forcing the photographer to relight the shot every time. Sutan is still giving Fo and London attitude for their boring styling ideas, and the girls laugh. Fo worries about what to dress London in because she's not skinny anymore. London isn't crazy about one of the things Fo picks, because she doesn't feel comfortable in it. As she takes to the set, we split screen to her casting in the bikini as she voiceovers that she thinks she's gained about 10-15 pounds during the competition. And thank you, editors, because I hadn't remembered her being that skinny. Yeah, that's not good. And her wardrobe for the shot does not look that great. Aminat directs Natalie's look, and that's awesome, because of how they hate each other. We flash back to one of their arguments just to remind us of how much they really do not get along. Mr. J notes that Aminat is wasting a lot of time in wardrobe, and isn't going to be ready with hair and makeup in an hour. As she furiously tries to get Natalie ready for the set, we go to commercials to drag out the tension.

cw-antm12-episode1208-container_033912-f953a7-500x333.jpg

When we return, Aminat reminds us what the challenge is, and as she rushes Natalie to set, insists it wasn't her fault, and Mr. J tells Aminat that it totally was, because she blew a lot of time in wardrobe. The final photo of Natalie is kind of weird an awkward, standing with her hand on her hip and the other arm bent over the top of her head. Teyona is directing Celia, and styles the shit out of her. She looks fantastic. Mr. J loves the styling so much that he even checks with wardrobe stylist Masha to make sure that the always fashionable Celia didn't actually style herself. And he's impressed to learn that no, in fact, Teyona did this all on her own. Unfortunately, his mood dims slightly when he and Ann don't seem to like the final shot that Teyona picks. London dresses Allison, and worries because Allison doesn't exactly scream urban. Mr. J likes Allison's makeup, but not the outfit, which includes a headband like the ones London herself favors. Ann agrees that it was her least favorite outfit of the day. Celia wants Fo to have a fauxhawk, mixing masculine and feminine. A dress speaks to her, and Fo does actually look pretty fierce. But then, she usually does anyway. Celia chooses her shot, and Mr. J notes that unfortunately, while it's a terrific picture, it's cut off at the ankles, so you can't see her shoes. Oops!

The girls all line up before Mr. J again, and he gets them all to agree that his job is real and not easy to do. Whatever. He tells Allison that it was nice to see her taking charge, but she didn't use her time well during the actual shoot. London imposed her own style onto Allison and it didn't look great, but she picked a good shot. Teyona, unfortunately, skipped an awesome photo of Celia for her weaker one, but styled her perfectly. He calls out Aminat for her awful time management skills, but Ann interjects that she did direct Natlaie into a perfect Seventeen-style pose with the arm over the head. So who did the best job? Teyona! She gets to pick two friends to come with her, and picks Celia — because she was her model and basically helped her win — and Aminat. Fo doesn't understand why Teyona didn't pick her because they're best pals in the house. The trio of girls go to another studio for the Seventeen shoot, and as much as I hate to admit it, their photos don't actually seem very good. They either look awkward, or in Celia's case, super old. I'm beginning to think that the platinum hair was a bad makeover choice for Celia because it makes her look geriatric.

cw-antm12-episode1208-container_033932-d00c5d-500x751.jpg

Back at the house, Allison wishes she'd won, but feels like this is the first time she's been able to prove that she's not a shrinking violet. But wait — there's Tyra Mail! "You haven't had too much R & R... Maybe it's time for some R & B." They pretty much guess an R & B music video, and settle on that. Very early the next morning, Mr. J slips into their house to wake them all up, and they're all freaked out. He's brought hair and makeup to them for a change, and they all settle in to get made up. Then the doorbell rings, and Teyona goes to get the door and promptly freaks out to find Ciara standing there. She screams her name and runs back into the house. Aminat comes rushing over and practically assaults her with a furious hug. She's seriously freaking out about it. Mr. J introduces her and lets her plug her new CD before telling the girls they're going to be appearing in a photo shoot with the singer. Celia interviews that it's exciting because she's been a fan of Ciara's "for quite some time." Yeah, like I'm guessing for about five minutes now? Ciara gives the girls a weak pep talk and they hop into the Gaymobile to head over to Webster Hall where the shoot will occur. Mr. J tells them that they're going to be on-stage with Ciara playing a crazed fan all wrapped up in her microphone cord. Aminat won't have to stretch because she already is a huge crazed fan. Mike Ruiz is their photographer, and tells them to be aware of their body as they're all wrapped up in the wires.

cw-antm12-episode1208-container_033962-0d4464-500x751.jpg

The wardrobe is essentially a black bikini with thick black cord wrapped all around their arms, legs and torso. London is less-than-thrilled by this, because she's turned into a fat ass. Ciara stands on the stage at the microphone, and the other girls stand below the stage like an audience as Celia takes the set and poses at Ciara's feet all wrapped up in the cable. She poses awesomely, but they keep giving her this hair that makes her look older than she already is. Which as they've pointed out in earlier episodes, is pretty old for modeling. Mr. J has Ciara come over to review the shots, while Celia watches from across the room. Ciara: "She gives good... stuff." Yeah, I'm guessing Ciara doesn't write her own lyrics. London is really freaked as she gets wrapped up in the cables, and Natalie notices how she's insecure because of her weight. Although to be fair, London is only overweight in terms of modeling. In the real world, she's normal. Time for ads, including another of McKey's life as a Cover Girl! That fashion show she was prepping for still hasn't actually happened, I guess, because she's busy helping some dying woman's Make A Wish come true by helping her walk in a runway show. Really? You get a dying wish and you want to be in a fashion show? Guess it takes all kinds...

London is super insecure as she takes to the stage, and prays to Jesus for confidence. Unfortunately, the insecurity is showing in her awkward and stiff poses. Mr. J asks Masha if he's imagining things of if London has become a heifer. Masha confirms that she's like the Goodyear Blimp. Mr. J thinks London did the best that she could do under the circumstances (of being morbidly obese), but is more concerned that she's not treating her body right. After the shoot, he calls London over to bring up the sensitive topic of her weight gain. He understands that there is stress, and that can lead to stress eating, but real modeling is going to be even more stressful, so what's going to happen to her then? He tells her she needs to eat healthier, because she's too tiny to be considered plus-sized. London puts on a brave face, but is clearly devastated by it all, and is grateful she's at least got God on her side. Because God loves everyone, even when they're big as a house.

cw-antm12-episode1208-container_033972-0cda77-500x333.jpg

Teyona gets on stage next and works that shit out. Everyone's so impressed, and Ciara notes that Teyona got so enthusiastic in her posing she wrapped herself up in the actual cables on the stage. Teyona is beginning to recieve what we in the reality TV watching world like to call the "winner's edit." She flew under the radar for a while, but suddenly the judges can't say enough good things about her. This is in direct contrast to London, who this week is receiving the "elimination edit" with way too much focus on her street preaching and weight gain. Get in all the story you can this week, because they won't be around next week! Anyway, next up is Natalie, who has had her hair teased out into a giant 'fro. Mr. J tells her to go out of her comfort zone, and she tries to look mean. But the snarling kind of makes her look ugly. To me. Fo gets wired up and Mr. J loves the variety that Fo is giving her in facial expressions and poses. Mr. J wants Allison to bring her energy from the challenge to the set, but she's still giving the same awkward poses and hesitant expressions. Mr. J stops the shoot for a second to tell her to get her shit together, and when they restart, she's kind of pissed, so that helps her bring some actual emotion to her face. Aminat is last up, and pretty much sucks from the get-go. At one point, she has her back to the camera like that's helping. Mr. J warns Aminat that Ciara looks fabulous in every shot, and totally showing her up. Aminat doesn't understand why she sucks, since she thinks she has the looks and the personality. Mr. J is equally befuddled, because her personality and drive never show up on-camera. Back at the house, Tyra Mail warns of the impending elimination, and everyone starts second-guessing their performance. Fo is confident, but Aminat is super-nervous. London tells Natalie and Allison about Mr. J calling her back to tell her she's fat, and interviews that God must be testing her.

cw-antm12-episode1208-container_034002-f969c8-500x333.jpg

Back from commercials, and it's time for panel! And the rules to owning your inner fierceness are back! "Music always helps a model find her own rhythm." The photo is of a sleepy Tyra holding the hand of a little girl, both wearing leopard print bathing suits. Tyra is resting her hand on a transistor radio sitting on a low wall. Seriously, Tyra looks like she's about to go over. She is definitely not smiling with her eyes. She's yawning. The girls stride out, and Tyra introduces the prizes and judges. Mike Ruiz is the guest this week. But then out of nowhere, this skinny male model in a black Speedo comes walking out from behind the girls holding a small wooden bowl. The girls giggle nervously as he passes them, and he kneels before Tyra (you know she's been waiting for somebody to do that) and offers up the bowl. He says something in gibberish, and she translates that he wants her to go to his country, but she doesn't know which one it is. God, why do we always have to have theater? Anyway, he offers her a gift from her country, and she starts nibbling on one of his nuts. From the bowl! God! She calls it a couple different names, and then screams that it's a Brazil nut! They're going to Brazil! Confetti sprays down from the ceiling as the girls lose their collective shit, and the judges start shaking maracas. Miss J is also wearing a Carmen Miranda headdress just to be extra gay. It's all incredibly annoying, but Tyra almost redeems the whole enterprise by ending it with "And... scene." Literally. Heh. Everyone calms down, and Tyra warns them that only six bitches are going to Brazil.

cw-antm12-episode1208-container_034032-4c341a-500x605.jpg

First up is Natalie, and I don't really like it. I think she looks a little ugly in the face. Paulina agrees with me on the face. Mike mentions that they had to kind of pull it out of her, and Tyra tells Natalie she needs to be "more present in [her] face." Um, okay. Next is Aminat, and Tyra thinks her yellow tank and red shorts are cute. Unfortunately, they don't like her photo. The pose is too relaxed like she fell down, and there's nothing in her face. Celia steps forward, and again, they love her outfit. Tyra suspects that Celia packed twelve fierce outfits to wear to every judging. The photo comes up, and Celia immediately blurts out that she likes it. Nigel notes that it's the first time that one of the girls has said that before the judges. Luckily, they all agree that her photo is as good as she thinks it is. Then it's Teyona's turn, and it's also really good. The judges all slather her with praise.

London steps forward, and good God, if you know your ass is getting bigger, and Paulina told you not to wear the tight shorts again, don't go all the way in the other direction and wear what look like some kind of bubble shorts. That's just going to make your ass look bigger than it actually is. Her photo is not terrific. The pose is kind of stiff. Tyra tells London that she smiles with her eyes naturally all the time, but that goes away when she gets in front of the camera. Suddenly, out of nowhere, Miss J asks her what she's eating. London admits to gaining some weight, and Miss J lectures that as a model, you have to treat your body as a temple. And for some reason, that's all they say about that. Huh. I really thought that Tyra would've turned that into a massive speech for herself and get London to cry for her. Because Tyra feeds off of the tears of wannabe models.

cw-antm12-fo-container_034112-4a1cac-500x666.jpg

Fo looks gorgeous in her dress, and her photo is fabulous. Tyra is suitably impressed. Nigel loves it, and praises her angles. Last, but not least, is Allison. They like it because she has some anger in her face. It's not the same expression. Miss J wishes the mood was also in her body, though, and Mike points out that they had to actually push her into that expression. Then Allison tries to compliment Mike by saying he was her favorite photographer to work with because of the learning process. Nigel totally rolls his eyes and Tyra joins him. Allison totally doesn't get it. Tyra reminds Allison not to compliment one photographer while the other one is still in the room, and Allison just digs herself in deeper by trying to explain how the learning experience was different. Allison is completely humiliated, and everyone laughs at her. Tyra jokes that maybe she won't be going to Brazil, and Allison seems to think she's kidding, but then sees Nigel's totally serious face, and blanches a little. Heh. I love it when they toy with their tiny little brains! As we go to commercial before deliberation, it's another Top Model in Action! Bre is signed with Ford Models and working. You may have seen her in ads for Pantene Pro-V. Or not. At least she's working! Are you?

Deliberation. Who's not going to Brazil? Natalie's photo is great, but in person, she's super bland. Mike liked the more demure contrast in person. They want Aminat to be better than she is, and kind of agree that she's better on the runway than in photos. Mike says he got some June Cleaver from the practically retirement age Celia at the shoot, and Paulina thinks she'd be a fabulous stylist. Tyra wants to keep her around to see what she'll wear next week. Teyona had a great shot, and has been consistently good. London has a beautiful face, but doesn't know what to do with it. Paulina sees her as more of an actress, and Mike doesn't see her in photos or the runway. Tyra brings up her permanently smiling eyes again, but when Nigel comments that there's something unique about London, Miss J cattily adds that there is, and it's her weight gain. Meow! Fo is stunning and took a gorgeous picture. Allison takes great photos, but Paulina remarks that none of the photographers seem to like her. Nigel says that the problem with Allison is that you love her portfolio and want to take your own photo of her, but then she gives you the same expression so you end up with the same shot. And a decision has been reached.

cw-antm12-teyona-container_034141-20facb-500x666.jpg

Tyra has a handful of photos, and these are the six girls going to Brazil. And the winner with the best picture in the bunch is... Teyona. Also going to Brazil are Fo, Natalie, Celia, and Allison. That leaves us with a bottom two of Aminat and London. They both walk forward where Tyra tells them what their problems are. London's face says it all. She knows she's going home and why. Aminat has all this potential with her body, face and personality, but that's not showing up in photos. London has amazing bone structure, and permanently smiling eyes, but it's not being captured on film. So who's going to Brazil? Aminat. She's understandably thrilled, and then stops to hug London good-bye. Well, at least Tyra didn't tell London that her problem was all that junk, all that junk inside her trunk. She urges London to work that beautiful face and figure out how to make it work in pictures. London hugs everyone good-bye and packs up her stuff to leave. She seems to be taking it pretty well, actually. She admits that she's still passionate about modeling, and isn't going to give it up. She just has to lose that weight she gained. What's up in next week's episode? The girls go to Brazil, obviously. What did you think? Expect heat, skin, and sequins!

Wootini, I'm frightened that you could write a wall of text like this about a show that is so shallow...and for every episode, too.
